No.3 Lions survive elements and Wahlert, 2-1

DUBUQUE - No.3 Linn-Mar survived Wahlert's upset bid and a second-half downpour to beat the Golden Eagles, 2-1, Thursday in girls soccer.

Olivia Garcia staked the Lions (8-1) to a 1-0 lead in the first half with a goal off an assist by Molly Brandt.

But a goal by Wahlert's Hanna Burmeier in the second half tied the game, 1-1.

Claire Larson's goal off another assist by Brandt lifted Linn-Mar to the win.

The Wahlert goal was only the second allowed all season by the Lions.

As it turned out, the game was won after it barely started when Xavier all-stater Kayla Armstrong scored on a rocket kick at the 38:03 mark of the first to give her team a 1-0 lead.

For the next 78 minutes, the Saints and the visiting Lions of Linn-Mar battled back and forth to a standstill.

“It was basically like a boxing match,“ said Linn-Mar Coach Steve Dickinson, whose previously undefeated and unscored upon squad on Thursday climbed from three to two in Class 3A poll.
