Lions lose twice at Elite Eight

JOHNSTON -- Linn-Mar finally got to play softball at the Elite Eight tournament on Saturday, but the Lions were upended twice.

Linn-Mar was beaten 10-0 by Johnston, then lost 4-1 to Class 3A No. 1 Solon.

The Johnston game lasted only five innings. Kortlan Ollinger had the only hit for Linn-Mar.  Maddy Ryan was the losing pitcher.

Alexis Kelsey had the Lions' only hit against Solon.  Kelsey Duggan scored Linn-Mar's lone run.  Lauren Swanson was the losing pitcher.

J-Hawks pound Lions in twinbill

Cedar Rapids Jefferson scored early and often in a doubleheader drubbing of Linn-Mar on Thursday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference softball matchup at the Linn-Mar field.

Kenna Fry hit two home runs in the first game and Hannah McInerney matched that effort, one being a grand slam, in the nightcap as the fifth-ranked J-Hawks swept, 14-2 and 14-4.

“She can never let me be the star,” joked Fry, who had five hits and four RBIs as part of Jefferson's 33-hit barrage.

“I’m really OK with her being the star,” countered McInerney. “I’m pretty proud of everybody tonight.”

Lions sweep MVC twinbill with 28 runs

WATERLOO - The Linn-Mar softball team scored 12 runs in one inning Tuesday night and swept a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at Waterloo East, 11-0 and 17-11.

The Lions (9-10, 7-7) went through their batting order twice when they scored 12 runs in the fourth inning of the nightcap. Maddie Rizor hit a three-run homer during the marathon frame.

Alexis Kelsey and Kelsey Duggan went 3-for-4 for the Lions in the first game. Maddy Ryan pitched a two-hit shutout in the 11-0 romp.

Rizor went 3-for-3 with a homer and six RBIs in the nightcap. Kortlan Ollinger, Duggan, Kelsey, Cheyenne Hansen and Madison Rentschler had two hits. Hansen was the winning pitcher.

Perkins helps Marion top Linn-Mar

Paige Perkins went 4-for-4 and drove in two runs as the Marion Indians trimmed Linn-Mar, 4-2, Friday in the completion of a suspended prep softball game from May 25.

Beth Knapp collected three hits and Haley Vanourney had two hits for the Indians. Cheyenne Hansen went 2-for-3 for the Lions and Lauren Swanson was 2-for-2.

Mikayla Goemaat was the winning pitcher, scattering four hits.
