Manderscheid scores 13 in Marion loss

Jacob Manderscheid scored 13 points to lead the Marion boys basketball team in a season-opening 64-39 loss to Western Dubuque on Tuesday at Marion,

After a 12-12 first period, Western Dubuque pulled away with a 21-10 run in the second period.

Spencer Haldeman led Western Dubuque with 25 points.

WESTERN DUBUQUE (64): Cole Otting 4 0-0 10, Bryce McAndrew 1 0-0 2, Tommy Kane 0 2-2 2, Luke Pothoff 2 0-0 4, Spencer Haldeman 8 6-6 25, Ben Burds 0 2-2 2, Nolan Baumhover 4 3-3 11, Jacob Westhoff 3 2-2 8. Totals 22 15-15 64.

MARION (39): Baylor Fish 1 2-2 4, Noah Walker 1 0-0 2, Craig Engle 1 2-3 5, Ryan Whalen 1 1-2 3, Jacob Manderscheid 5 2-2 13, Cody Alberts 1 0-0 2, Devin Quinn 1 0-0 2, Derek Smith 1 1-2 3, Deshaun Quinn 2 1-2 5. Totals 14 9-13 37.

Kennedy hosting Hall of Pride event

Four Metro boys basketball teams will participate in an Iowa Hall of Pride Challenge event at Kennedy High School on Saturday, Nov. 29.

There will be a series of four regulation 32-minute games, but the contests are considered scrimmages and will not count on a team's record for the 2014-15 campaign.

The Linn-Mar Lions will face the Marion Indians in the first game at 1:30 p.m. Wapsie Valley faces Vinton-Shellsburg in the second game at 3 p.m.

The final two games match Cedar Rapids Prairie against Aplington-Parkersburg at 4:30 p.m. and Kennedy against Center Point-Urbana at 6 p.m.

The Kennedy Men's Basketball Parent Support Group is hosting the event.The sponsors are Cedar Rapids Toyota, Transamerica and General Mills.

All eight teams will participate as bell-ringers for the Salvation Army Red Kettle Drive. The Kennedy Support Group also will make a donation to the Hall of Pride scholarship fund.

Prairie tabs Rickertsen for boys hoops

Cedar Rapids Prairie High School Activities Director Rocky Bennett didn't have to look far to find a qualified candidate to lead the boys basketball program.

Bennett announced Friday that Jeremy Rickertsen has been promoted and will become the new coach, pending board approval. He succeeds James Moses, who resigned after the season.

"We are very excited to have Jeremy take over our boys basketball program," said Bennett. "I have followed Jeremy's coaching career, and he always demonstrated the desire to improve in everything he did.

Carter tops all-Metro basketball team

Kennedy senior A.J. Carter has been named the Athlete of the Year on the 2014 All-Metro Boys Basketball Team, as selected by the Metro coaches.

Jon McKowen of Kennedy was named the Metro Coach of the Year in his first season with the Cougars.

Jacob Olson of Jefferson, Adam McDermott of Xavier, Jordan Bohannon of Linn-Mar, Michael Mims of Prairie, Jared Printy of Washington and Nic Uhlir of Linn-Mar joined Carter on the first team.

Quinn, Engle make all-Wamac squad

Daly Quinn of Marion High School has been named to the first team on the Wamac Conference all-star basketball squad this season.

Craig Engle of Marion was named to the second team.

Quinn Cannoy and Trevor Hardman received Honorable Mention for the Indians.
