Solon girls oust Indians from tourney

The Solon girls knocked down 8 of 11 free throws in the fourth quarter and beat Marion, 64-50, Wednesday in a Class 4A regional quarterfinal basketball game.

Solon (11-11) advances to play Cedar Rapids Xavier in a semifinal round game Saturday night at Xavier.

Marion (13-9) had one fewer field goal than Solon, but the Indians struggled at the free-throw line, making only 5 of 16 charity tosses.

Kennedy girls smoke Marion in finale

The Kennedy girls basketball team came out smoking Saturday night at home against Marion for a non-conference season finale, put the game away early and rolled to a 74-42 victory.

“We wanted to play well and make this a dress rehearsal for our first round tournament game against Jefferson,” said Kennedy Coach Tony Vis. The Cougars host Jefferson on Wednesday in a 5A regional tournament game. “Marion has a good team and we played with excellent offensive efficiency especially in the first half.”

Kennedy (14-7) had three players in double figures. Stephanie Botkin led all scorers with 15 points. Jordan Holmes and Paige Hendrickson added 12 and 11 points, respectively.

Marion - Girls Basketball

Marion girls pounded by Pointers

CENTER POINT - Center Point-Urbana bolted to a 27-10 halftime lead and buried Marion, 53-26, Tuesday night in Wamac Conference girls basketball.

Amanda Sahm's nine points led Marion (13-7, 10-4). Beth Knapp had eight points.

Arika Woolridge scored 16 points for Center Point-Urbana (16-5, 11-3).

Knapp's 19 lead Marion past Williamsburg

Beth Knapp continued her hot shooting Friday night with 19 points that led Marion past Williamsburg, 46-40, in Wamac girls basketball.

Knapp finished the week with 45 points. She scored 26 Tuesday night in a win over Independence.

Michalyn Mohr added 15 points for Marion (13-6, 10-3).

Knapp nets 26 as Marion girls dance to win

With their sixth win in the last seven games, the Marion girls are girding themselves for the stretch run.

“We’re playing good when we should,” said senior shooter Beth Knapp after torching Independence for 26 points in a runaway 54-35 victory at home Tuesday night.

Coming together when it counts under new coach Corby Laube, the Indians (12-6) remain in hot pursuit of the Wamac West title with a 9-3 conference mark.
