Banes tosses in 17 in Marion win

TIFFIN - Emi Banes scored 17 points and Michalyn Mohr added 15 to lead Marion past Clear Creek Amana, 63-59, Friday in Wamac Conference girls basketball.

Amanda Sahm added 10 points for the Indians (11-6, 8-3).

Clear Creek Amana is 9-9 overall and 4-7 in the Wamac.

Marion - Girls Basketball

Perkins leads Marion girls to win

Paige Perkins scored 14 points to lead Marion past Vinton-Shellsburg, 43-28, Tuesday night in a Wamac Conference girls basketball game at Marion.

The Indians (10-6, 7-3) salted the game away at the free-throw line, making 15 of 21. Emi Banes was 6 of 8 and had eight points.

Vinton-Shellsburg dropped to 1-15, 0-10.

Mohr nets 27 as Marion sails by Columbus

WATERLOO - Michalyn Mohr poured in 27 points Friday night as the Marion Indians defeated Waterloo Columbus, 54-39, in a Wamac Conference game in Waterloo.

Mohr, a 5-foot-10 sophomore, made 13 field goals and was 1-for-3 at the foul line.

Beth Knapp hit three 3-pointers and contributed nine points for Marion (9-6, 6-3). Emi Banes chipped in with seven markers.

Benton girls charge past Marion

For a team that’s struggled all year getting out of the gate, the Marion girls couldn’t have picked a worse time for another slow start.

Coming to town Tuesday night leading the Wamac West Division by a game and ranked No. 2 in Class 4A, the Benton Bobcats (13-1, 7-1) charged out to a 15-2 and never looked back.

Plagued by six turnovers in each of the first three quarters, the Indians tried to play catch-up the whole way in a 55-38 loss.

Marion girls bounce CPU

The Marion girls talk about how passionate new coach Corby Laube is about the game of basketball.

Turns out he’s prophetic, as well.

When his young squad bounced back from a shaky start at home Friday night to take a 12-point lead over Class 3A No.12 Center Point-Urbana at halftime, Laube was still cautious.

“These guys are too good,” he said to top assistant Pete Messerli. “They’re gonna come back.”
