Jaime welcomes Dad's help with Lions

It was just a couple of weeks before the Linn-Mar girls basketball season started when first-year head coach Jaime (Printy) Brandt introduced the team to her newest assistant.

"This is my dad,” she said. “And that’s probably going to be the last time you hear me call him that."

Since then, he’s simply known as “Coach Printy,” the same as her other assistant is “Coach Suther.”

“And I call her ‘Coach,’” says Jaime’s dad Jeff of the unique daughter/father coaching relationship. “Oh, we slip occasionally. But it’s her team. She runs the show. I’m just on board to help out in any way I can.”

It isn’t something that had been in the works for a long time.

Jaime does say, however, “I used to joke that if someday I ever became a head coach I’d hire Dad as my assistant.

Marion - Girls Basketball

Marion cruises to seventh win

WASHINGTON - Michalyn Mohr and Chloe Rice each scored 10 points as Marion had no trouble downing Washington (Iowa), 45-23, Monday night in non-conference girls basketball action.

The Indians (7-2) led 24-13 at halftime. Marion was solid from the foul line, connecting on 21 of 25 attempts.

Morgan Kimball led Washington (2-6) with seven points.

MARION (45): Peyton 0 4-4 4, Rice 2 6-6 10, Smith 0 0-0 0, Cannoy 0 0-0 0, Sahm 1 5-6 7, Dunne 0 1-2 1, Mohr 3 4-4 10, Laube 2 1-3 5, Steepleton 0 0-0 0, Kelly 0 0-0 0, Westhoff 0 0-0 0, Sade 1 0-0 2, Jordan 2 0-0 6. Totals: 11 21-25 45.

Chloe Rice wins Metro Spotlight Award

Marion freshman Chloe Rice is the winner of the Metro Spotlight Award for high school girls this week, the Metro Sports Report announced Sunday.

Rice, a 5-foot-10 guard, is one of the top young basketball players in the state. She poured in 28 points in a 58-56 loss to Clear Creek-Amana Tuesday and is averaging 12.5 points for the season.

Rice is already being followed by NCAA Division I colleges who might like to recruit her, including several of the top schools in Iowa.

Laube’s 19 leads Indians

VINTON – Mia Laube had 19 points to lead the Marion girls basketball team in a 53-33 win over Vinton-Shellsburg on Friday.

Michalyn Mohr added 12 points, and Amanda Sahm had 10 for the Indians, who improved to 6-3.

Maci Griffith had 20 points to lead Vinton-Shellsburg (0-8).

MARION (53): Peyton 0 1-2 1, Rice 2 2-2 6, Smith 0 0-1 0, Sahm 1 8-10 10, Dunne 0 0-0 0, Mohr 5 2-3 12, Laube 7 5-6 19, Steepleton 0 0-0 0, Sade 0 0-0 0, Jordan 2 0-0 5. Totals 17 18-24 53.

Rice pours in 28 for Marion girls

Freshman Chloe Rice scored 28 points for the Marion Indians Tuesday night in a 58-56 setback to Clear Creek-Amana in a Wamac Conference girls basketball game at Marion.

Rice made 10 field goals, including a 3-pointer, and went 7-for-7 at the foul line. Freshman Mia Laube contributed 11 points for Marion (5-2).

Hanna Stokes topped a balanced attack for Clear Creek-Amana with 14 points. Lexi Kinnaird and Emily Wieland netted 13 points apiece for Clear Creek-Amana (3-4).

CLEAR CREEK-AMANA (58): Mougin 1 0-0 3, M. Hall 0 0-2 0, K. Hall 1 5-7 7, Stokes 5 4-10 14, Kinnaird 3 6-10 13, Wieland 5 2-4 13, Seelman 3 2-4 8. Totals 18 19-35 58.
