Cale Cannoy escaped serious injury

Marion High School pitcher Cale Cannoy suffered a "deep contusion" when he was hit in the upper body by a line drive against Benton Community Monday night, but hospital X-rays were negative and he did not suffer any broken bones.

Cannoy was hit in the ribs on the left side, under his arm, according to Marion Coach Steve Fish.

Cannoy, a graduated senior, has a 3-1 record for the Indians and is hitting .297. He is also a starting outfielder.

Cannoy is listed as "doubtful" for Thursday night's doubleheader against Mount Vernon, but is expected to play again this season. Cannoy accompanied the Indians on their annual trip to the College World Series in Omaha Tuesday.

Cannoy has suffered a series of injuries during his baseball career at Marion. He was hit by a line drive while pitching in the Metro Tournament as a sophomore in 2010 and missed most of the 2011 campaign with an arm injury.

Cannoy was hit by a line drive in the second game of Monday's doubleheader. In addition, he suffered a hamstring injury in the first game but said he was healthy enough to pitch in the nightcap.
