Former Marion High School baseball star Patrick Lala has accepted an offer to pitch for the Schaumburg (Ill.) Boomers in the independent Frontier League.
Lala attended a tryout camp with the Boomers on Saturday and accepted a spot on the team. He plans to sign a contract and begin playing this week.
Lala, 22, was an all-state player at Marion and helped the Indians reach the state tournament in 2006. He was an all-region selection at Kirkwood Community College before joining the Iowa Hawkeyes, where he compiled a 3-9 overall record.
Lala, a 6-foot-2 righthander, was selected in the 29th round of the 2010 major league draft but did not sign.
