Ross recovery lets Indians survive

The game. A season. High school careers.

They were all on the line.

And a big lineman, of all players, saved the day for Marion Wednesday night at home by recovering a late-game fumble to preserve a nail-biting, 29-27, Class 3A playoff win over Western Dubuque at Thomas Park.

Trying for a last-ditch drive to take the lead for the fifth and final time, Bobcat quarterback Dylan Kramer hit Riley Pfieler for an 11-yard completion to the Indian 35 with 1:15 to go.

But Marion linebacker Ethan Herren smacked the receiver just after he caught the ball and it bounced to the turf.

“I saw the ball rolling,” said Marion tackle Mitch Ross, who was about five yards away from the play. “I knew it was our last chance to win the game. And I wasn’t going to let it get away.”

So the 6-foot-3, 300-pound senior mustered the moxie to do what he had to do.

“I just dove as far as I could and pounced on the ball,” Ross explained. “And I felt on top of the  world.”

His heroics wouldn’t have mattered much if two of his teammates hadn’t pulled off some magic of their own just moments before.

Trailing 27-23 with 3 minutes left in the see-saw contest, Marion’s Quinn Cannoy fair caught a punt at the Indians' 12-yard line.

It was do or die for the Indians (8-2).

On first down from their own 25 and under 2 minutes to, quarterback Trevor Hardman lofted a Hail Mary down the sidelines to Cannoy that was tipped away at the Bobcat 40.

Savvy Marion Coach Tony Perkins called for the very same play, and this time Cannoy caught it over the leaping defender and ran it in for a 75-yard scoring strike to put the Indians back in the lead for good.

"Actually,” Perkins pointed out during a raucous post-game celebration. “I wanted Trevor to go to the inside receiver. (Tyler) Gunderson was wide open down the middle.

“But it just shows the confidence Trevor had in Quinn that he’d be able to go up and get the ball. It was a great play.”

And it showed the resilience of a battered bunch of players on a team beset by injuries all year. Two of their best, Andrew Davis and Justin Dolley, were sidelined for the season in last week’s 17-16 loss at DeWitt Central.

And workhorse tailback and linebacker Trev Biery was still nursing a foot sprain that has hampered him for the last few games. He still played all but a few downs on both offense and defense, made a ton of tackles and bulled his way to 156 yards on 29 carries.

“It takes a toll on ya,” Biery admitted. “But we all battle it out for each other. We’re all brothers out there.”

Indeed, as  players and fans gathered on the field afterward, their season-long motivational chant was lustily belted out once again.

“One, two three...all  in.”

As his team readies for a rematch at home Monday against DeWitt (7-3), Perkins said this year’s team has overcome a lot of obstacles. “This is a special group of kids,” he said. “Look at tonight. They came back after being down four times. They just kept clawing and fighting.

“We had some breakdowns on defense that resulted in big plays for them. But our offense kept bailing us out.

“We controlled the ball. And when they had to, the guys rose to the occasion. They kept their heads up and never gave up.

“That, to me, says a lot about their character.”

DeWitt Central advanced with a 24-21 win at West Delaware.

Western Dubuque ended its season 4-6.

Perkins hopes Indians are mentally ready

The Marion Indians say they are ready to face Western Dubuque in the Class 3A playoffs Wednesday night, but Coach Tony Perkins is not sure.

The Indians suffered a double-blow at DeWitt Central last Friday. They blew a 16-7 lead and lost, 17-16, dropping into a three-way tie for the district title. And they also lost two key players to injuries that night.

Perkins thinks the Indians have enough talent to survive the loss of Andrew Davis (broken leg) and Justin Dolley (torn MCL), but he's not sure they've had enough time to recover mentally and emotionally.

Marion stumbles into playoffs with 17-16 loss

DEWITT - The Marion Indians won their district title and claimed a No. 1 seed for the Class 3A playoffs Friday night, but they didn't feel like winners.

They didn't play like winners, either.

Marion squandered a nine-point lead in the second half and lost to DeWitt Central, 17-16, in the final game of the regular season at DeWitt.

The Indians would have captured an outright division title with a victory. Instead, they finished in a three-way tie for the District 6 crown and won the No. 1 seed on a tiebreaker.

Marion (7-2) will host Western Dubuque (4-5) in the opening round of the playoffs Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Thomas Park.

The Indians did not back into the playoffs, but they didn't exactly go through the front door. They lost three fumbles, surrendered a crucial kickoff return for a touchdown and lost two key players to injuries.

"We'll use it as motivation," said tailback/linebacker Trev Biery. "This could be good for our team. We learn from it, come out Wednesday even stronger.

"Come out pissed off," he said. "That's our plan."

Andrew Davis was having a big game for the Indians with 76 yards on the ground and two touchdowns, but he broke his leg with 8:29 left in the fourth quarter and left the field on a stretcher.

Justin Dolley was on crutches after the game, his status unknown for the playoffs.

"Being they're your brothers, it sucks," Marion captain Ethan Herren said about the injuries. "It's real emotional. But it's football, and it's next-man-in.

"You can't hang your heads on injuries like that. We've just got to bounce back."

The game had an odd ending. DeWitt Central owned the lead, but the Sabers attempted some tricky plays that could have cost them the game. Marion was trailing, but the Indians punted in the final seconds to prevent the Sabers from scoring again.

It all had to do with the playoffs and tiebreakers.

The Indians knew they would get the No. 1 seed from District 6 if the race ended in a three-way tie and they lost by fewer than 11 points Friday night.

Meanwhile, the Sabers knew they had to win by 11 points or more, which is why they didn't sit on a 17-16 lead with a minute left in the game.

"We played it smart," Marion Coach Tony Perkins remarked.

Perkins hates to lose and always plays to win, but this was a rare exception where discretion was the better part of valor.

"We could have come out with two minutes to go on our 10-yard line, guns ablazing and thrown it all over the place," he said. "But you've got to play for the big picture in that case.

"Big picture, it's a three-way tie for the district championship and we still get the No. 1 seed. So big picture, we've got the playoffs coming up on Wednesday."

Marion, Solon and DeWitt Central tied for the district title with 5-1 records.

Marion got off to a bad start Friday. Biery lost a fumble on the first play from scrimmage and DeWitt Central promptly scored on a 13-yard run for a 7-0 lead.

The game was just 16 seconds old at the time.

The Indians rallied and grabbed a 16-7 lead on a 3-yard touchdown by Davis, a 22-yard field goal by Dalton Ott and a 14-yard touchdown by Davis with 43.4 seconds left in the third quarter.

Then it turned sour again.

Jacob Feldpausch returned the ensuing kickoff 87 yards for a touchdown, pulling DeWitt Central within 16-14 with 27.2 seconds left in the third period.

The Sabers kicked off and Marion senior Nick Connolly lost the ball on the kickoff return at his own 35-yard line, giving DeWitt excellent field position. The Sabers drove to the 4-yard line and took their 17-16 lead on a 22-yard field goal by Keegan Laff with 8:29 left in the game.

Davis broke his leg on that field-goal attempt and had to be carted off the field.

Perkins thought his offense and defense played well, except for the lost fumbles. He also bemoaned the kickoff return for a TD.

"We actually scored 16 points. We gave them 17," he remarked. "We'll fix that the next two days. We've got Western Dubuque. We'll come out and play hard."

Marion blanks Clippers; 1 step closer to title

The Marion Indians coasted to a District 6 victory at home Friday night as they defeated Clear Creek Amana, 27-0, on Senior Night.

The win clinched a tie for the district title for the Indians (7-1, 5-0). Marion plays at DeWitt Central (5-3, 4-1) next Friday in the regular season finale. If the Indians lose and Solon loses to Benton, DeWitt Central earns the district's top seed in the playoffs. A loss that results in a three-way tie will come down to a tiebreaker based on the 13-point system.

Of course, if Marion beats the Sabers, it wins the district outright, the No. 1 seed and home games in the first two rounds of the playoffs.
