No.3 Indians spike Vinton-Shellsburg

VINTON - The third-ranked Marion High School volleyball team opened the season with a 25-8, 25-11, 25-18 conquest of Vinton-Shellsburg Thursday night in a Wamac Conference match in Vinton.

Marion collected 43 kills in the contest. Isabella Sade had 14, Alyssa Thomas 13 and Olivia Frazier seven.

Amanda Sahm had 36 assists. Johanna Steggall was 25-for-25 on serves with three aces. Sahm also had three aces and Tanea Westhoff had two.

Abby Phillips contributed 19 digs for Marion. Steggall had 12. Frazier led the blocks with two.

Indians, Lions climb in volleyball poll

Two of the top volleyball teams in the state are located in Marion, according to the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

The Marion Indians climbed one spot to No.3 in the Class 4A rankings Thursday and the Linn-Mar Lions climbed two spots to No.7 in the Class 5A poll.

The Xavier Saints are ranked No.11 in Class 4A, down one spot from the initial rankings. The Kennedy Cougars jumped into the rankings at No.10 in Class 5A.

1. Harlan (6-0), 2. West Delaware (5-0), 3. Marion (0-0), 4. LeMars (3-0), 5. Sioux City Heelan (3-1), 6. Indianola (7-4), 7. Clear Creek-Amana (4-2), 8. Charles City (4-1), 9. Boone (5-1), 10. Lewis Central (2-1), 11. Xavier (0-1), 12. Davenport Assumption (2-0), 13. Waverly-Shell Rock (4-2), 14. DeWitt Central (5-0), 15. ADM (6-2).

1. Ankeny Centennial (7-0), 2. Dowling Catholic (6-0), 3. Bettendorf (5-0), 4. Johnston (1-0), 5. Ankeny (0-1), 6. Iowa City West (3-1), 7. Linn-Mar (1-0), 8. Southeast Polk (9-0), 9. Council Bluffs Lincoln (4-2), 10. Kennedy (2-2).

Marion ranked 4th in volleyball poll

The Marion Indians have been ranked fourth in the Class 4A preseason volleyball poll, the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union announced Monday.

Marion finished with a 25-16 record last season.

The Xavier Saints are ranked No. 10 in Class 4A. The Linn-Mar Lions are ranked No. 9 in Class 5A.

Harlan grabbed the No. 1 spot in the 4A rankings. Ankeny Centennial was voted No. 1 in Class 5A.

The other top-ranked clubs are Holy Trinity in Class 1A, Dike-New Hartford in Class 2A and Solon in Class 3A.

Sahm will join Gardner-Webb volleyball

Marion High School junior Amanda Sahm has accepted a scholarship offer to play college volleyball at Gardner-Webb University.

Gardner-Webb is an NCAA Division I college and a member of the Big South Conference. It is located in Boiling Springs, N.C.

Sahm was named IGCA Honorable Mention All-State in 2012 and is a two-time first team All-Wamac performer. She also participates in basketball and soccer at Marion High School and was named second team All-Wamac in basketball this season.

Phillips will join ISU volleyball

Marion High School junior Abby Phillips has verbally committed to attend Iowa State University and play collegiate volleyball, the high school announced Monday.

Phillips is the career record holder at Marion High School in digs. She has been a three-year varsity starter on the Marion volleyball team.

Phillips is also the starting goalie on the Marion High School girls soccer team.
