Marion wins title at Mid-Prairie

WELLMAN - The Marion Indians won four straight matches Saturday and captured the top prize at the Mid-Prairie volleyball tournament.

Marion trimmed West Liberty, 20-25, 25-16, 16-14 in the championship match.

The Indians defeated Iowa City Regina (21-8, 21-12) and West Liberty (21-17, 18-21, 16-14) in pool play, then topped Mid-Prairie in the semifinals (25-7, 25-15).

Marion drops squeaker to Independence

INDEPENDENCE - The Marion Indians pushed Independence to the wire Tuesday night before falling, 26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 15-25, 17-15, in a Wamac Conference volleyball marathon at Independence.

Amanda Sahm had a busy night for Marion (10-8, 2-2) with 60 assists. Alyssa Thomas had 29 kills and eight blocks. Kaela Halvorson and Taylor Wade had eight kills.

Abby Phillips collected 23 digs for the Indians. Johanna Steggall made 15 digs. Stephanie Hedtke and Olivia Frazier had seven blocks apiece.

Marion stuns Xavier for title

All season long, the Marion High School girls have seemed to lack the killer instinct on the volleyball court.

“We've been struggling putting teams away,” acknowledged star defender Abby Phillips.

It looked like it might be more of the same Saturday in their own eight-team invitational tournament.

They reached the championship final with an upset over highly regarded Grundy Center, but quickly lost the first game to an even more formidable foe in Xavier.

Marion trims CCA in 5-set thriller

The Marion Indians nudged Clear Creek Amana, 22-25, 26-24, 25-12, 20-25, 15-11, in a Wamac Conference volleyball match pitting ranked foes that went down to the wire at Marion Tuesday night.

Olivia Frazier ended the marathon with a kill to win the fifth and final set for the No.12 Indians.

No.14 Clear Creek Amana jumped to a 5-1 lead in the fifth set, but Marion rallied and finished the match with two key blocks and Frazier's slam.

Marion sweeps Benton in volleyball

VAN HORNE - The 12th-ranked Marion High School volleyball team rolled by Benton Community, 25-11, 25-11, 25-14, in a Wamac Conference match in Van Horne Tuesday night.

Kaela Halvorson led the Indians (4-3, 1-1) with 11 kills. Johanna Steggall had nine kills and Alyssa Thomas had seven.

Amanda Sahm collected 23 assists. Abby Phillips had 20 digs. Thomas went 12-for-12 on serves and Steggall was 9-for-9.
