Marion spikers edged by CPU

The Marion High School volleyball team pushed Center Point-Urbana to the limit Thursday night before falling, 20-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-17, 15-13, in a Wamac Conference match at Marion.

Kaela Halvorson had 15 kills and 15 digs for the Indians. Alyssa Thomas had 10 kills and went 13-for-13 on serves. Johanna Steggall had eight kills and went 15-for-16 on serves.

Abby Phillips made 38 digs and was 11-for-12 on serves. Morgan Swanger made four blocks.

Marion is ranked 12th in Class 4A, Center Point-Urbana 14th in Class 3A.

Wahlert ousts Marion from 4A tourney

Marion won the first set, but No. 13 Wahlert came storming back to claim the next three and knocked the No. 10 Indians out of the Class 4A regional volleyball tournament Thursday night at Marion.

The loss ended Marion's season at (26-14).

Marion claimed the first set, 25-20. Wahlert bounced back to win the second, 25-18.

Marion battled back from a 17-10 deficit in the third set to take a 24-23 lead. An ace serve by Wahlert finally gave the Golden Eagles the set, 28-26.

Wahlert then rolled to a 25-17 win in the fourth set.

Alyssa Thomas led the Indians with 11 kills and two blocks. Amanda Sahm had 28 assists and Abby Phillips 19 digs.

"We have had a great season and have improved tremendously this season," Roxanne Paulsen said. "Tonight was just not our night.

"We were a step slow up front blocking and never really slowed Wahlert down up front.  The girls played hard and Wahlert did what they needed to to walk away with the win.

"Our seniors have had a great season and we will miss them next season."

Marion rallies to advance in tourney

Marion won the last two sets and bounced back to beat Western Dubuque in five sets Monday night in a Class 4A regional volleyball first round match at Marion.

The Indians (26-13) advance and will host Dubuque Wahlert on Thursday night at 7.

Marion lost the first set against Western Dubuque 29-27, but bounced back to take the second 25-21.

Western Dubuque took the third set 25-20 to put Marion's back up against the wall.

The Indians bounced back to win the last two sets 25-19 and 15-11.

Jessica Thomas led the Indians with 16 kills, five blocks and four ace serves. Amanda Sahm had 60 assists.

4 Indians make all-Wamac volleyball

Four players from Marion High School have been named to the all-Wamac Conference volleyball team.

Sophomores Abby Phillips and Amanda Sahm were named first team all-conference. Senior Jessica Thomas and freshman Alyssa Thomas were named second team all-conference.

The four Indians were named to the West Division team.

Marion spikers beaten by Mount Vernon again

MOUNT VERNON - Marion met up with nemesis Mount Vernon in the quarterfinals of the Wamac Conference volleyball tournament Thursday night.

And for the second time in three nights the Mustangs pinned a loss on the Indians.

Marion was beaten by Mount Vernon 25-18, 15-25, 15-5.

Mount Vernon beat Marion in three sets in pool play Tuesday night at Center Point. The Indians finished second in the pool and drew Mount Vernon in the quarterfinals of Thursday's bracket tournament.

The loss Tuesday dropped the Indians into a consolation match against Clear Creek Amana that Marion won 19-25, 25-23, 15-13.

Mount Vernon lost in the semifinals to Solon, 26-24, 25-22. Solon beat Maquoketa in the championship match 17-25, 25-15, 15-10.
