Thomas helps Marion kill Benton, 3-0

Alyssa Thomas collected 14 kills and three blocks Tuesday night as Marion swept a Wamac Conference volleyball match against Benton Community, 25-8, 25-9, 27-25, at the Marion gym.

The Indians finished with 30 kills in three games, with Kaela Halvorson contributing five kills.

Amanda Sahm had 23 assists and went 17-for-17 on her serves, with six aces. Johanna Steggall went 24-for-25 on serves with seven aces.

Abby Phillips came up with 15 digs and Kaitlyn Nathem had eight.

Marion spikers trip CPU, 3-1

CENTER POINT - Alyssa Thomas collected 16 kills and 10 blocks Thursday night as the Marion Indians defeated Center Point-Urbana, 25-14, 17-25, 25-15, 25-22, in a Wamac Conference volleyball match.

Jessica Thomas went 18-for-18 on serves for Marion with five aces. She also had nine kills.

Amanda Sahm finished with 37 assists and three blocks. Abby Phillips went 21-for-21 on serves (two aces) and had 19 digs. Kaela Halvorson contributed 12 kills.

Marion (1-0, 1-0) is ranked No. 14 in Class 4A.

Hannah Miller 3rd team volleyball all-state

Kennedy senior setter Allie Hutcheson has been named to the Elite Team of the Iowa Girls Coaches Association all-state volleyball teams.

The Cougars reached the Class 4A semifinals all four years of Hutcheson's prep career. They lost all four games, the last three to Iowa City West. The Women of Troy won the state championship the last two years.

Hutcheson led Kennedy with 289 kills and had a .462 kill efficiency. She had 793 assists and 40 blocks.

Hutcheson also was named to the Class 4A first team. Kennedy junior Lexi Rogers was named to the second team and junior Jordan Calef earned honorable mention.

Marion senior middle blocker Hannah Miller was named to the Class 3A third team and teammate Sara Ernst earned honorable mention.

Tripoli senior Megan Gilbert was named the Player of the Year.

Wahlert bounces Marion out of tourney

EPWORTH - Top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert swept Marion in straight sets, 3-0, Wednesday night in a Class 3A volleyball regional tournament final at Western Dubuque.

The Indians were beaten 25-20, 25-17, 25-16.

Wahlert (29-8) advances to the state volleyball tournament next week at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena. The first round of the Class 3A tournament is Wednesday night.

Marion ended its season with a 29-13 record.

Marion sweeps South Tama; Wahlert next

Marion won all three sets and took one step closer to a girls state volleyball tournament berth Thursday night, downing South Tama in the Class 3A regional semifinals at Marion.

The Indians (29-12) whipped South Tama, 25-15, 25-11, 25-16.

Marion advances to play top-ranked Dubuque Wahlert in the regional finals at Epworth on Wednesday, Nov. 2. The winner advances to the state tournament Nov. 9-12 at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

Marion and Wahlert have not played each other this season.
