Wounded Prairie Hawks lose to Little Hawks

On a night when Prairie desperately needed someone to score and rebound, the guy who has been doing it for them all season was on the bench in street clothes.

Senior swingman Matt MacDougall dislocated his shooting shoulder in the second quarter of the Hawks' 54-46 win at Dubuque Hempstead Tuesday night. Without him at home Friday night, Prairie was out-muscled by the physical Iowa City High Little Hawks, 56-42.

MacDougall, the only effective Prairie big man at 6-foot-4, said he hopes to be back in action next week. He was sorely missed against City High.

He's the team's leading scorer at 14.1 points a game, and his 105 rebounds in 14 games are more than double that of anyone else on the  roster.

"Obviously, Matt is a key ingredient for our team," said Prairie Coach James Moses. "We missed his scoring. And we missed him getting putbacks and finishes on the boards.

"City High got quite a few extra rebounds. That gave them some confidence, and they muscled us a little bit."

Iowa City High Coach Adam Loria said better rebounding and a stouter defense were the differences in his squad reversing a 54-47 loss to Prairie in Iowa City a month ago.

"We're not the most efficient team on offense," he said. "So we have to win with defensive intensity and rebounding.

"The first game, Prairie beat us the boards. But tonight I thought we were really aggressive on the offensive glass. And we limited them to one shot."

City High (7-10, 4-8) depends on quick guard play, some bruisers inside and high-flying 6-foot-6 senior guard Jerel Moore. The Little Hawks pretty much manhandled the Hawks (7-10, 3-9) for three quarters, building up a 36-21 lead.

"I thought we started out smooth and in a nice flow," Moses said. "But as the game progressed we got out of sync. We didn't run our offense and made too many quick shots."

With time running out on them, the Hawks finally picked up the pace on both defense and offense three minutes into the fourth quarter. As if trying to put an exclamation point on a runaway victory, Moore went in for an uncontested shot and saw his dunk attempt bounce high off the rim and clear back to the scorer's table.

Prairie then put together a 10-0 run to bring the game back to 42-36 with 2:58 left.

"I thought we were much more physical and aggressive on defense," Moses said. "That helped our offense."

Senior guard Jacob Aune, the only Prairie scorer for the night in double figures with 12, led the 10-0 surge with a 3-pointer and a layup following a steal. From that point on, the game became a ragged one.

Moore hit three of four free throws. Then, in a scuffle for a loose ball at midcourt, Hawk guard Jace Hanna suffered a broken nose and left the game when hit by Moore's flying elbow. No foul was called, and Moses said the play seemed to take the momentum from his squad.

Trying to catch up, Prairie fouled and City High made its free throws to widen the gap. Moore led his team with 14 points.

"I was pleased with the way the guys responded after being down," Moses said. "We still need to work out some kinks. We'll go back to the lab and get ready for our final four games and the playoffs."
