Washpun, MacDougall face bright futures at UNI

CEDAR FALLS - Wes Washpun and Matt MacDougall looked sharp in their University of Northern Iowa warmup suits Saturday afternoon.

They sat next to each other on the UNI bench as the Panthers rolled by Wartburg, 103-50, in the season opener at the McLeod Center.

Washpun and MacDougall are being redshirted, so all they could do was watch and cheer for their teammates as the Panthers eclipsed 100 points for the first time since 1997.

Hanna picks Upper Iowa for basketball

Jace Hanna of Cedar Rapids Prairie committed to play basketball at Upper Iowa University Monday night, Prairie football coach Mike Morrissey said Tuesday.

Hanna is the starting quarterback for the Prairie football team as well as the point guard for the school's basketball team.

Hanna, 6-foot-1, averaged 9.5 points, 3 assists and 2 steals for the Hawks this past season as a junior. Prairie finished with a 9-13 record.

Hanna was named first team all-Metro and second team all-Mississippi Valley Conference in basketball for the 2011-12 campaign.

Upper Iowa University is an NCAA Division II school that competes in the Northern Sun Conference.

MacDougall accepts spot with UNI basketball

Ben Jacobson looked Matt MacDougall in the eye last Thursday and offered him a spot on the University of Northern Iowa basketball team for next season.

MacDougall didn't need any time to think it over. "I accepted on the spot," he said Monday night.

MacDougall, a 6-foot-4 guard from Cedar Rapids Prairie, will join the Panthers as a preferred walk-on, which means he's guaranteed a place on the team but will not receive a scholarship next season.

"I'm excepted to get to work," he said. "Hopefully I'll work real hard and will be able to help the club some day."

MacDougall averaged 14.3 points and 6.4 rebounds this season and made third team all-state.

MacDougall will be the fourth former Metro player on Coach Jacobson's team next season, joining Wes Washpun (Cedar Rapids Washington), Matt Bohannon (Linn-Mar) and Max Martino (Cedar Rapids Kenendy). Washpun announced Monday that he plans to join the Panthers after spending one year at Tennessee.
