Prairie girls snap 14-game losing streak

Nobody on the Prairie girls’ basketball team could remember the last time they won a ballgame.

“I don’t know,” Coach Steve Doser said.

How about you, Katelyn Carver: Can you remember the last victory?

“Ummm, no,” she said, thinking hard. “No, I can’t.”

And you, Kaitlyn Wieland? Any clues?

“No,” she quickly confessed.

Prairie snapped a 14-game losing streak with a 65-51 victory over Mount Pleasant in its home opener on Nov. 26.

Prairie’s last victory was a 54-37 triumph over Waterloo East on Jan. 5, 2010. The Hawks lost their final 13 games last season and dropped their opener this year during the drought.

“Pretty long,” Carver said.

The streak is dead.

“It feels good,” said Carver, a senior who scored seven points. “Everyone had a smile on their face when we went in (the locker room). It was good to get back on the winning side of things.”

Freshman Madison Dellamuth led the Hawks (1-1) with 16 points, including six straight free throws in the final minute. Shelby Crist contributed 11 points.

“We’ve got the personnel to do some damage this year a little bit, in terms of creating some things that we haven’t been able to create,” said Doser, who enjoyed seeing nine players score points.

“We just have to protect the ball a whole lot better and rebound a little bit better,” he said. “It will come.”

Prairie scored its most points since a 66-40 victory over Waterloo East on Feb. 3, 2009, but the Hawks were not interested in looking back Friday night.

“We don’t focus on the losses, we just focus on moving forward. That’s all we have to do,” said Wieland, a senior. “We can’t focus on what we’ve done in the past. We just have to look forward with a new team and everything.”

Taylor Shull led Mount Pleasant (0-2) with 23 points.

Dellamuth scored 16 points despite having problems with an ankle brace, which made it uncomfortable to play and caused numbness in her foot.

“She’s a gamer,” Doser said. “And you want the ball in her hands. That last three minutes, she did a nice job.”

The streak is dead.

“It’s good to get a win,” he said.
