Prairie - Girls Basketball

Prairie girls whipped by No. 2 West, 75-45

Twelfth-ranked Cedar Rapids Prairie is hitting a rough patch in the home stretch of its girls basketball season and it may not get any tougher then it was Thursday night.

Second-ranked Iowa City West had four players score in double figures and raced past Prairie, 75-45, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.

Prairie (11-6, 8-5) got 18 points from Courteney McCrary, but lost its third straight game. The Hawks play at No. 9 Iowa City High Friday night, then have games against ranked foes Dubuque Wahlert and Xavier next week.

“We have to play better,” Prairie Coach Steve Doser said. “We have three tough ones left, we got to be better.”

Iowa City West (17-1, 13-0) plays at Jefferson Friday night. The Women of Troy suffered their only loss Saturday, 52-48, at Class 3A No. 2 Davenport Assumption. They rebounded with a 20-point win over Mount Pleasant before whipping Prairie by 30.

“They are obviously one of the top teams (in the state).” Doser said of West. “They are very balanced and can all shoot, which is rare.”

Prairie battled with the Women of Troy in the first quarter, playing and just about matching the Women of Troy’s fast paced, pressure style of basketball.

After one quarter of up and down basketball the Hawks trailed by just 21-19.

“We ran with them in the first half,” Doser said. “I thought we did a good job and came ready to play.”

McCrary kept the Hawks' offense rolling with 12 of her game high 18 in the first quarter on 5 of 6 shooting.

“Courteney did a nice job tonight,” Doser said.

Iowa City West started pulling away early in the second quarter with an 8-2 run, and pushed its lead to 12 as leading scorer Ally Disterhoft got hot from distance and the Women of Troy defense limited McCrary’s touches.

“We need to get more kids to step up offensively,” Doser said. “We didn’t have a real good flow and we didn’t take care of the ball real well.”

The game was still within reach for the young Hawks coming out of halftime, but Iowa City West showed what makes them so tough by completing controlling the pace while increasing its lead to 19 after the third.

“Our defense was poor in the second half,” Doser said.

The Hawks were shut out from the floor in the fourth quarter.

Junior Alisa Weiland added nine points for the Hawks.

Disterhoft and senior Shelly Stumpff paced West with 17 apiece.

IOWA CITY WEST (75): Ally Disterhoft 6 2-2 17, Brianna Sturtz 0 0-0 0, Shelly Stumpff 7 3-4 17, Jessica Shull 2 0-0 6, McKenzie Piper 6 1-1 13, Tatum Klein 4 2-4 11, Shahana Williams 1 0-0 2, Kelley Fliehler 0 0-0 0, Griffin Reed 1 0-0 2, Lauren Larson 2 0-0 5, Mackenzie Haight 0 0-0 0, Dani Craig 0 0-0 0, Mikaela Morgan 0 0-0 0, Grace Tafolla 1 0-0 2, Mollie Mason 0 0-0 0, Laynie Whitehead 0 0-0 0. Linn-Mar girls get even with Prairie

The Linn-Mar girls basketball team improved by 29 points in 42 days to get revenge against Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday night.

Freshman Lannie Nietert scored a career-best 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Lions spanked the 10th-ranked Hawks, 52-43, on Hall of Fame night at Linn-Mar.

It was quite a turnaround, considering the Hawks ran the Lions out of the gym in their first meeting at Prairie on Dec. 16, 63-43. Linn-Mar lost the first game by 20 points, then won the rematch by nine points for a 29-point swing.

"The last game we played against Prairie was a great learning experience for us and we found out some things that we weren't very good at," said Linn-Mar Coach Mike Brandt. "So hopefully we've cleaned that up a little bit."

In their first meeting six weeks ago, the Hawks pestered the Lions all night long with full-court pressure that forced a string of turnovers and easy buckets.

Also in that first meeting, Linn-Mar went with a man-to-man defense much of the game and paid the price. The Lions (9-8, 5-7) switched to a zone defense Friday night, cut down on their turnovers and collected a good victory.

"We did a much better job of keeping them out of the lane," said Brandt. "The last time we played them they just went by us a lot. They got in the lane and got easy shots.

"Our goal tonight was to make sure that we contested every shot and kept them in front of us so that we didn't give up easy layups and easy shots."

Prairie had won eight straight games before losing to Kennedy Tuesday night, and now the Hawks (11-5, 8-4) have dropped two straight road contests.

"We've lost our moxie. We're trying to get it back," said Prairie Coach Steve Doser.

The Hawks held an early 11-5 lead, but Linn-Mar scored 10 straight points in the second quarter and led 24-19 at intermission. Alexis Libenguth, a 6-foot-2 junior, used her height advantage and scored five points during the 10-0 spurt.

Prairie battled back and tied the game, 40-40, with a 12-point surge of its own in the second half, but the Hawks could not get the lead and fell back.

Courtney Major made a three-point play to give Linn-Mar a 43-40 lead with 2:33 left, then Sara Strauel hit a layup for a 45-40 advantage.

Courteney McCrary pulled the Hawks within 45-42 with two free throws, but Linn-Mar made 5-of-6 free throws to take a 50-42 lead with 49.7 seconds remaining. Nietert, who was promoted to the varsity from the sophomore team this month, made four of those free throws and finished the scoring with a layup.

Nietert was promoted after Shanice Cheatham tore her ACL and Rachel Thrune was idled for a month.

"She's just growing and getting better every day," said Brandt. "Very, very strong kid. She's got a great attitude and she's got a great demeanor to be a varsity basketball player as a freshman. She really came through for us.

"That's the No.l thing we want out of her, just to be physical and rebound the ball. Scoring is a plus."

The Lions finished with a 10-high straight in the scoring column, in poker terms. Jenna Harms scored 6 points, Strauel finished with 7, Mykaela Brandt had 8, Major finished with 9 and Nietert had 10.

McCrary led Prairie with 14 points. She did not start the game due to illness, then got into foul trouble and missed important stretches of the contest.

PRAIRIE (43): Yanacek 2 0-0 4, Hutchins 2 1-3 5, Weiland 3 0-0 8, Dellamuth 3 2-6 8, Rotter 1 2-3 4, McCrary 3 8-9 14, Ganske 0 0-0 0, Freeman 0 0-0 0. Totals 14 13-21 43.

LINN-MAR (52): Yearling 1 3-4 5, Brandt 2 3-3 8, Strauel 3 1-2 7, Harms 2 2-3 6, Major 3 1-1 9, Libenguth 2 1-1 5, Ryder 0 0-0 0, Eiles 1 0-0 2, Nietert 3 4-4 10. Totals 17 15-18 52.

Halftime - Linn-Mar 24, Prairie 19. 3-point goals - Prairie 2 (Weiland 2), Linn-Mar 3 (Major 2, Brandt 1).

Giant-killing Cougars strike down Prairie

If they keep this up, they’ll have to stop calling them upsets.

For the third time this month, unranked Kennedy toppled a ranked opponent, beating No. 8 Prairie, 58-52, Tuesday night on their home court.

The Cougars upset No. 6 Ames on Saturday night and stunned then-No. 9 Washington on January 6. They have won four straight and five of seven contests in January to raise their record to 8-6 overall, 6-5 in the Mississippi Valley Conference, setting up the possibility of an interesting finish in the Mississippi Division race.

It was only a matter of time before his young team would snare some big wins, said Kennedy Coach Dennis Roloff, whose Cougars were 3-4 at the end of December after letting some close contests slip away.

“We’re getting experience, and the kids are maturing and they’re getting much better and they’re believing in themselves. Their confidence is there. I’ve told them all along that we were going to be able to do that, and they’re believing it.”

Prairie (11-4, 8-3) had won eight in a row and was up by three after three quarters, but the Cougars nailed a perfect 14 of 14 from the free throw line in the final period, led by Cool Hand Courtney Strait with six, to turn back the Hawks.

Standing on the line was just where she wanted to be in the fourth quarter, said Strait, who led all scorers with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

“This year when I’m shooting free throws I just don’t even think about anything other than the basket. I have the most experience in the high-pressure games and I know I’m going to be confident at the line, so it’s easier for me to have the ball than people who are going to panic.”

Her teammates Madi Meier, Stephanie Botkin and Jordan Holmes also hit their free throws down the stretch.

“Courtney is one of the best in the state in shooting free throws,” said Roloff. “She’s got the school record of 23 in a row and she’s shooting 80-some percent, but the other kids followed through tonight, too."

Prairie set a torrid pace with its fast break offense to start the game and was up 13-12 at the end of the first period. In the second, the Cougars were able to break the Hawks’ press, as Strait scored four field goals and Meier and Paige Hendrickson hit the Cougars’ only 3-pointers of the evening to push their team to a 28-18 halftime lead.

A determined Prairie came back recharged after the break, outscoring Kennedy 19-6 to take a 37-34 lead after three periods.

But Kennedy stayed poised and scored three quick baskets to start the fourth, then clung to a slim lead.

With a minute left in the game, Prairie’s Alisa Weiland hit a 3-pointer and, after Kennedy was called for a travel. Cyerra Hutchins scored a free throw to pull the Hawks to within two, 54-52. But the Cougars sealed the victory with four final bullets from the charity stripe.

“The girls turned it around in the fourth,” said Roloff. “We said, ‘Hey, pick it up,’ and they did. They came out and they played hard, and whenever you catch a couple of baskets, it’s boom boom, and they caught the fire. We’ve been fading in the fourth quarter in a lot of our games and that’s where we’re maturing. We’re starting to play the fourth quarter very well.”

Doser, whose own young squad has experienced a remarkable turnaround from last year, said his team fought to the finish but couldn’t find its rhythm in the final period.

“We battled back from an 8-0 deficit and then got up three going into the fourth. I thought that would be a good momentum thing, but they came out and hit some shots and we had a couple of turnovers that made it a 7-0 run for them and we just didn’t recover.

"Kennedy knocked down some big shots and they knocked down free throws at the end. That’s what it takes to win these tight games and Kennedy did it, so the credit goes to them.”

Strait, the state’s top 4A scorer with a game average of 21.2, has scored the lion’s share of her team’s points in several contests, but says the team’s more balanced offense in the past month is helping to put them back in the win column.

“Experience-wise, we’ve just turned the corner. Right now we’re not focused at all about who’s scoring the points. It’s just getting the job done. Earlier in the season some of our younger kids would worry too much about mistakes and that would psyche them out in a game. We’re just getting so confident in each other that we can say, ‘Just forget it and move on,’ and that’s going to give them confidence to go right back and make a basket.”

Hendrickson added 13 points and Botkin 12 for the Cougars. The Hawks were led by Weiland and freshman bench player Emilie Rotter with 13 points each.

The Cougars will take aim at another ranked team when they play No. 10 Iowa City High  Friday night at home. The Hawks play at Linn-Mar on Friday.

PRAIRIE (52): Kaitlyn Yanacek 0 1-2 1, Cyerra Hutchins 4 1-2 9, Alisa Weiland 5 2-2 13, Courteney McCrary 4 2-2 11, Madison Dellamuth 1 1-2 4, Mackenzie Serbousek 0 1-2 1, Emilie Rotter 6 1-2 13. Totals 20 9-14 52.

KENNEDY (58): Madi Meier 3 2-2 9, Courtney Strait 7 6-6 20, Kaylese Johnson 0 0-0 0,  Stephanie Botkin 4 4-4 12, Paige Hendrickson 6 0-0 13, Mariah Simmons 1 0-0 2, Jordan Holmes 0 2-2 2, Sarah Zinser 0 0-0 0, Capria Davis 0 0-0 0,  Aryn Nelson 0 0-0 0. Totals 21 14-14 58.

Halftime – Kennedy 28, Prairie 18. 3-point goals – Prairie 3 (Weiland, McCrary, Dellamuth), Kennedy 2 (Meier, Hendrickson). Fouled out – none.
