Prairie pushes No. 3 West before falling

IOWA CITY -- The Prairie girls basketball team made third-ranked Iowa City West sweat a little Friday night before losing, 61-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game.

Prairie trailed at halftime, 29-17, but the Hawks began the second half with a 16-4 spree to tie the game 33-33 with about three minutes left in the third quarter.

Iowa City West (13-1, 10-1) regained control and pulled away, but not until after Prairie left a calling card.

Alyssa Weiland made three 3-pointers and led Prairie (3-11, 2-9) with 17 points. Freshman Madison Dellamuth netted 12 points.

Mckenzie Piper, a transfer from Keokuk, topped Iowa City West with 18 points. Shelly Stumpff scored 11 points and Shahana Williams added 10. West hit 20 of 23 free throws.

Howell impressed with Hawks' effort

Tia Dawson sure knows how to fill out a stat line.  And the record books.

The 6-foot-2 Washington senior became the school’s all-time leader in blocked shots Tuesday night and dominated Prairie in a 67-51 win at the Hawks' gym.

Dawson passed Kayla Pirtle (1991-95), who had 231 blocks during her Washington career. Dawson now owns the single-season, single-game and career records. She needed just two rejections to break the record, but had four to give her 234.

Prairie offense shackled in loss to Xavier

Xavier Coach Tom Lilly said before Friday night's girls basketball game that he wanted to score at least one more point than Prairie.

He didn't say how many points that might be, but it turned out it didn't have to be many.

No. 11 Xavier jumped off to a 19-1 lead and cruised past Prairie, 43-14, at the Saints gym.

Xavier (11-3, 7-3 MVC) shutout Prairie (3-9, 2-7) in the first quarter.  The Hawks did not score until freshman Maddie Dellamuth hit the second of two free throws with 1:57 left  in the second quarter. MacKenzie Blaha's 3-pointer with 25 second left accounted for Prairie's other first-half points. Xavier held a 19-4 lead at halftime.
