Carver grew up with Prairie basketball

Tom and Linda Carver have had a daughter on the Prairie basketball team for 11 straight years.

First Jessi. Then Laura. Then Beth. Now Katie.

Katie, the youngest daughter, grew up watching her sisters play for the Hawks.

“A lot of road trips. Dubuque, and Cedar Falls. Late nights,” Katie said. “At home games, I always sat with my parents and watched them.”

It began in grade school, then continued into middle school. Jessi graduated from Prairie in 2004, Laura in 2005, Beth in 2008. Katie watched them all.

“They always had a fire to get after the ball,” she said. “Always on the floor.

“Carvers aren’t very good offensive shooters,” she claimed, “but defense is our main thing.”

They live in Shueyville and have a basketball hoop in their driveway, where they played family games of Pig, Horse and One-on-One.

Hawks pound Waterloo East

Rocky Bennett, the activities director at Prairie, made a good prediction before the Prairie girls basketball team played Waterloo East Tuesday night.

Bennett remarked that "The Prairie squad was young, improving, and with the enthusiasm of Coach (Steve) Doser at the helm, they were going to continue to improve as the season moves along."

He was right on this night. The Hawks buried Waterloo East, 74-26.

Prairie girls snap 14-game losing streak

Nobody on the Prairie girls’ basketball team could remember the last time they won a ballgame.

“I don’t know,” Coach Steve Doser said.

How about you, Katelyn Carver: Can you remember the last victory?

“Ummm, no,” she said, thinking hard. “No, I can’t.”

And you, Kaitlyn Wieland? Any clues?

“No,” she quickly confessed.
