Franklin delivers in the clutch for Warriors

Cedar Rapids Washington passed the basketball eight times in the final 24 seconds Friday night before Dani Franklin got the ball in front of her own bench.

She let it fly just in time.

Franklin drilled a long 3-pointer at the buzzer as the No.8 Warriors stopped Prairie, 65-62, in an exciting Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.

The Hawks connected on 11 of 19 shots from 3-point range to subdue the Tigers. Alisa Weiland and Courteney McCrary hit three triples, Olivia Usher and Madison Dellamuth hit two 3-pointers and Cyerra Hutchins made one.

Weiland and McCrary topped a balanced attack for Prairie (9-3) with 13 points apiece. Hutchins and Dellamuth netted 12 points apiece.

Dellamuth had six assists and Hutchins grabbed five rebounds.

Madison Wood scored 19 points for Cedar Falls (4-6).

The game did not count in the MVC standings.

Weiland, Hawks shoot down Wahlert

Alisa Weiland scored 18 points and led Prairie past Dubuque Wahlert, 54-44, Friday night in Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball.

Both teams were coming off a winter break and no competitive action for about two weeks, but Prairie capitalized on this first game of 2013 and improved its record to 8-3 overall and 6-2 in the Mississippi Valley Conference.

Courtney McCrary, a huge factor on defense adding 14 points, and Cyerra Hutches, riding 89 percent free throw shooting, netted 10 points for Prairie.

“We put some new wrinkles in the offense and added a couple of plays over the break,” Prairie Coach Steve Doser said.

But it may have been a tremendous defensive effort by every Hawk on the floor that really aided in the victory.

Wahlert led much of the first half, helped by the tenacity and scoring of Olivia Smith and center Marissa Cody, who combined for 15 points in the paint.

At the three minute mark of the second quarter, Hutchins pulled Prairie to within 20-18. She had a couple of steals, scored a field goal and added the free throw to put Prairie ahead for the first time at 21-20 at the 2:24 mark of the second quarter.

Smith put Wahlert back on top 22-21 just before half and a goal by Ana Schmidt gave Wahlert the 25-23 halftime lead.

In the third quarter, the lid was on the Golden Eagles and Prairie took over the lead for good. The Hawks led 41-32 at the end of the period.

Prairie played aggressive defense, only fouled 13 times, and kept Wahlert from shooting many free throws with the exception of Logan Lynch who was 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.

“We emphasized what we had been doing in the past and wanted to keep that up defensively,” mentioned Doser.

The Hawks seemed to pick up right where they left off against Linn-Mar in their last game before the break. Weiland bombed home a huge 3-point goal to start the pivotal third quarter and that seemed to turn the tide for Prairie the remainder of the game.

Doser was concerned with two big games coming up next week with Cedar Falls (Tuesday) and Cedar Rapids Washington (Friday).

Wahlert had two players in double figures. Cody scored 13 and Lynch had 11. The Golden Eagles (2-6) face Marion on Saturday night in a non-conference game at Loras College in Dubuque.

“We wanted to take care of the basketball and make smart passes,” Wahlert Coach Kris Spiegler said.

Though many excellent assists were noted, the shooting percentage dropped off in the third quarter and led to the defeat of the Golden Eagles.

Prairie bounces past Linn-Mar girls

Madison Dellamuth scored 21 points and the Prairie girls rolled over Linn-Mar, 53-34, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference basketball game at Linn-Mar.

Prairie (7-3, 5-2) was looking to bounce back from a 46-23 loss at Dubuque Hempstead last Friday night that dropped the Hawks out of the Class 5A rankings.

“We’ve got to play better defense, play with more urgency on defense, and we have to forget about the poor performance at Hempstead,” Prairie Coach Steve Doser said before the game.

Mission accomplished.

Dellamuth canned all 10 of her free throw attempts in the second half to seal the victory. Courtney McCrary added 15 points and Cyerra Hutchins totaled nine points.

“Different kids did good things at different times,” summarized Doser.  Clutch free throw shooting (16 of 21) aided the Hawks’ cause “and we did a good job of hitting the boards” Doser said.  Prairie had a 32-27 edge on rebounding and limited its turnovers to 12.

Linn-Mar (4-6, 3-3) had only 11 turnovers and did have very balanced scoring. Eight Lions scored, all between two and six points. Courtney Major and Mykaela Brandt each had six points for the all-senior starting crew for Linn-Mar.

“We kept the tempo up and we want to keep pushing the ball up the floor and play our tempo,” stated Doser after the game.  “All girls have the green light to shoot and Madison gets us on a roll and this helps our whole team out.”

Though it was a total team effort for Prairie, Doser also cited the play of freshman Makenzie Stoffer, who finished with four points.

Doser mentioned the Hawks have many key matchups after the Christmas break, but Friday’s victory gives significant momentum into 2013.

“We have Wahlert at home; twice we matchup with Washington, Cedar Falls and Waterloo West, so there are plenty of key games ahead,” Doser said.
