Prairie girls return to rankings at No. 10

The Cedar Rapids Prairie girls basketball team popped back into the Class 5A rankings Thursday at the No. 10 spot after a two-week absence.

The Hawks (6-2) were ranked No. 9 in the preseason poll, but dropped out after some early losses. They returned this week after defeating then-No. 9 Kennedy on Tuesday night. That loss knocked Kennedy out of the poll.

The Xavier Saints (6-2) held on to their No. 5 spot in the Class 4A rankings.

Mason City is ranked No. 1 in Class 5A and Bishop Heelan is No.1 in Class 4A.

Prairie girls knock off No. 9 Kennedy

After his undefeated girls were upended 51-44 at Prairie Tuesday night, Kennedy Coach Tony Vis summed it up best.

“It’s not always the size of the dog in the fight,” he said. “Sometimes it’s the size of the fight in the dog.”

His Cougars came into the dogfight at 5-0 and ranked ninth in last week’s Class 5A poll.

Although playing again without injured center Morgan Martin, they still had more veterans and more height in the lineup than the short-handed Hawks.

Prairie girls trimmed by No. 2 City High

In a game of inches, the spunky Prairie Hawks played the Little Hawks of Iowa City High almost right down to the wire Tuesday night at home.

They lost at the end 50-42, but it was mostly because they didn’t have the size to keep the second-ranked team in the state from getting rebounds and buckets under the basket.

Prairie’s hard-nosed 5-foot-9 forward Courteney McCrary did her best to contain budding 6-foot-3 superstar Haley Lorenzen of City High. But she was forced to the bench in key stretches with foul trouble and eventually fouled out trying to keep the ball away from the towering Little Hawk post player.
