Prairie Hawks upset No.1 Ankeny

Many elements are necessary to upset a top-ranked team.

For such an event to happen, the underdog team has to execute to perfection, take advantage of any opportunities and come up with the clutch plays at clutch times.

Cedar Rapids Prairie's baseball team did all of the above Thursday night.

The Hawks turned three double plays on defense, scored all five of their runs after two were out and got big hits from seniors Ty Mougin and Brennan Hammer in the decisive two-run sixth inning to send top-ranked Ankeny back to central Iowa with a 5-3 defeat in a well-played game at Prairie.

Prairie hammers J-Hawks in sweep

Pitching that ranged from solid to stellar allowed Cedar Rapids Prairie to sweep a doubleheader from Jefferson Wednesday night at Jefferson’s home field.

The stellar performance came in the first game from Spencer Dean. The senior right-hander allowed just one hit in a 15-1 rout. The Hawks took the nightcap, 7-4.

With Dean striking out five J-Hawks while walking one, Prairie scored in every inning but the first, touching three pitchers for 16 hits.

Prairie splits with No.3 Iowa City West

IOWA CITY - The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team staged a pair of furious seventh-inning rallies Monday in a Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader at No.3 Iowa City West.

The first rally produced an 8-4 victory. The second rally forced extra innings, but Iowa City West prevailed, 12-11, in eight innings in the nightcap.

"We lost the lead in both games, but battled back and had a couple of good seventh innings," Prairie Coach Matt Thede reported. "The guys were confident and trusted we could get it done."

Tyler Butz drove in three runs and Caleb Davison went 2-for-3 for Prairie (9-6, 5-3) in the opener. Brennan Hammer pitched a complete game for the victory.

Butz helps Prairie 'dodge' Kennedy

Cedar Rapids Prairie senior Tyler Butz hurt his right shoulder this spring playing prom dodgeball.

True story. Prom dodgeball.

Butz is almost fully recovered now and played a major role Tuesday as the Hawks spanked Kennedy, 7-3, to beat the struggling Cougars on back-to-back nights.

Butz went 3-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and a sacrifice bunt. He also played a solid game at second base, although he's itching to return to third base once his right shoulder is back to normal.
