Streaking Lions sweep Prairie

The Linn-Mar Lions are young, talented and tied for first place in the Mississippi Valley Conference after sweeping a doubleheader from the Prairie Hawks Friday night.

The Lions are riding a 10-game winning streak after taking care of the Hawks, 2-1 and 12-3, with strong pitching, timely hitting and good defense at the Linn-Mar field.

Linn-Mar was scuffling along a few weeks ago with a 5-and-6 record, but the Lions are sitting at 15-6 overall now and 10-2 in the MVC heading into Monday night's big doubleheader at Kennedy in a showdown for the league lead.

"We're hitting the ball. Pitching. Playing good defense," assessed Jake Stolley, who tossed six shutout innings in the opener. "It's what works."

The Lions used 14 players in the doubleheader, with nine juniors and five seniors taking the field. That youth could bode well for the future at Linn-Mar.

"It's going to be strong. Next year and the year after that," said Stolley, one of the seniors. "Keep going strong."

Stolley, an impressive lefthander, threw 113 pitches and kept Prairie guessing with a fastball, nasty curveball and changeup. "I'll be sore tomorrow morning, but that's usual," he said after the relatively high pitch count.

Nate Greve pitched the seventh inning and got his second save, although the Hawks made him work for it by scoring an unearned run and putting two more runners on base before he put out the fire.

Greve also made a key defensive play in left field, gunning down Tyler Butz at the plate in the fourth inning when Butz tried to score from third base on a fly ball.

"That was a really big play," said Stolley. "You don't get those every day, but that's awesome."

Stolley (3-1, 1.35 ERA) has struck out 43 batters in 31 innings this season. He plans to join the Northwestern University baseball team as a walk-on this fall and is thinking about studying chemical engineering.

Greve (5-1, 0.97 ERA) has struck out 44 batters in 21 2/3 innings and will be one of the starting pitchers against Kennedy Monday night.

Linn-Mar scored both of its runs in the opener in the third inning on an RBI double by Mitch Stickney and an RBI single by Austin Stroschein. Greve and Kevin Bogert began the rally with one-out singles.

Bryce Alberts pitched well for Prairie in the opener but was the hard-luck loser. The game ended with Prairie's Brayton Carlson called out on a bang-bang force play at second base.

If Carlson had been ruled safe, the Hawks would have had the bases loaded with two outs with Brennan Hammer coming to the plate with a chance to give his club the lead. Hammer was already 2-for-2 in the ballgame with a walk.

Prairie Coach Matt Thede disputed the call at second base, to no avail.

The Lions took control of the nightcap with a six-run outburst in the fourth inning. They nearly ended the game by the 10-run rule when they scored four runs in the bottom of the sixth, but fell a run short of enacting the mercy rule.

Bogert and Jimmy Roth drove in two runs apiece in the nightcap for Linn-Mar. Michael Redmond had two doubles.

Stroschein pitched a complete game for Linn-Mar and collected 10 strikeouts, including three whiffs in the seventh inning, but the junior was called upon to throw 128 pitches (unofficially) in the seven-inning game.

Linn-Mar's 10-game winning streak began on June 4 with a 9-5 victory at Iowa City West in the second game of a doubleheader. Since then, the Lions have defeated Clinton, Cedar Rapids Washington (twice), Muscatine, Fort Madison, Cedar Rapids Jefferson (twice) and now Prairie (twice).

The Lions were delighted to sweep Prairie. "I don't think we were expecting to do that," said Greve.

The Hawks have lost seven of their last 10 games, dropping to 10-10 overall and 6-6 in the conference.

Linn-Mar Coach Chad Lechner said his club has made some adjustments after suffering a few tough losses early in the season. He likes the way the team is playing now.

"We've been hitting. That's what we've been talking about," he said.

Lechner added two former head coaches to his staff this season with Kyle Rodenkirk and Brent Henry now helping the team. Rodenkirk was the head coach at Anamosa and Henry was the interim head coach at Cedar Rapids Washington last year.

"It's been absolutely fantastic," said Lechner. "I've had some good assistants through the years, but this year has really, really clicked. They've taken on a lot of stuff."

Rodenkirk works with the pitchers and catchers, while Henry has been working with the hitters.

"It's been a blast," said Lechner. "I love those guys. They're doing a great job for us."

Prairie splits wild twinbill with Wahawks

Waterloo West entered Monday night's Mississippi Valley Conference doubleheader against Prairie with zero league victories in its first seven chances.

That drought ended as the Wahawks and Prairie Hawks split a high-scoring twinbill at Prairie.

Waterloo West won the first game, 18-8. Prairie rebounded and captured the nightcap, 9-6.

The first game was a slugfest from the opening pitch. The Wahawks sent 11 men to the plate in the first inning and scored seven times on five hits. Prairie starter Bryce Alberts lasted only nine batters and recorded just one out while giving up seven earned runs.

The Hawks (10-8, 6-4) fought back with four runs in the second, but gave three back in the top of the fourth to make the score 10-4. Prairie scratched out four more runs in the bottom half of the fourth to get within two, 10-8.

That would be as close as the Hawks would get. They lost the opener by virtue of the 10-run rule in six innings. Waterloo West finished with 17 hits in game one as every one of its nine starters recorded a safety.

“When a team pours out 17 hits there is not much you can do, with the exception of hoping they hit it right to you,” said Prairie Coach Matt Thede.

Game two was a different story for the Hawks. Waterloo West jumped on the board for a 2-0 lead, but the Hawks unloaded in the third with seven runs on five hits. The Hawks had four consecutive two-out, run-scoring hits by Tyler Butz, Trey Beckman, Alberts and Tyler Votroubek.

Brennan Hammer was not as sharp as he had been in previous outings but he was good enough to get the win, going 5 2/3 innings and giving up three earned runs on seven hits with eight strikeouts.

Alberts, the game-one starter, was asked to close the nightcap and came into a bases-loaded, one-out situation in the top of the seventh with the Hawks clinging to a 9-6 lead. He promptly got Wahawk first basemen Matt Ohrt to ground into the 4-6-3 game-ending double-play.

When asked about the difference between game one and game two for the Hawks, Alberts said, “I think it is just lack of focus. We are all mature kids but we need to grow up as a team, and regain that focus, and just play baseball.”

Hammer sparkles as Hawks top No. 1 Cougars

Cedar Rapids Prairie dropped out of the Class 4A baseball rankings this week, but the Hawks don't care a whole lot about that.

They know they have the ingredients for a good club this year and they proved it Tuesday night.

Brennan Hammer carried a shutout into the seventh inning and Prairie beat top-ranked Kennedy, 3-1, in a crisp Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.

Hammer went the distance and handcuffed the Cougars most of the night with 11 strikeouts, but it got a little dicey in the seventh inning when Kennedy plated its only run and had runners at second and third with only one out.

Josh Jahlas, who had struck out three straight times against Hammer, walloped a line drive to deep center field that would have scored both runs and tied the game with two outs, but Jason Velvick reacted quickly and made a leaping catch to end the contest.

Hammer's immediate thought when Jahlas hit that ball was, "Oh, crap."

"When I saw it off the bat I got worried," said Hammer, a talented lefthander, "but thank god I have a good center fielder."

Hammer effectively mixed his fastball, curveball and changeup all night. The Cougars had particular trouble with his late-breaking curveball, which would approach the plate at the knees and drop to the batter's ankles at the last second.

"The umpire was commenting how much his ball was moving," said Prairie Coach Matt Thede. "Every single pitch had movement on it. And frankly against one of the top programs in the state, you're going to have to be like that."

Kennedy (9-2, 4-2) managed only two opposite-field hits in the first six innings, but the Cougars battled to the end.

Derek Jacobus led off the seventh with a triple down the right-field line and scored on a base hit by Brock Skow. Alex Hayden singled to left and Jared Staton bunted the runners to second and third with one out, but the rally ended there.

Hammer fanned Andrew Johnson for his 11th and final strikeout, then Jahlas hit his rocket to center field that looked like a two-run double when it left the bat.

"It was exciting to beat the No. 1 team in the state, but we respect them," said Hammer, who is already one of the Metro's top pitchers as a junior. "They're a great ball team. They do things right."

The Hawks beat Kennedy ace Hayden, an all-state pitcher last year as a junior. Hayden had mild control problems in the first inning when he walked the leadoff batter and hit the next man in the helmet with a breaking ball that didn't break.

Hammer hit a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0, Tyler Votroubek hit an RBI double to make it 2-0 and a Kennedy throwing error made it 3-0. Hayden needed 35 pitches to escape the first inning, but he found his groove and pitched a complete game.

"We got three runs in the first inning and that gave us some confidence," said Hammer.

Prairie (8-5, 4-2) gave Kennedy a tough game Monday night before falling 5-4 at Kennedy, then the Hawks finished the job Tuesday night. Thede said he enjoys playing the Cougars and matching wits with Kennedy Coach Bret Hoyer.

"You have to bring your best," said Thede. "You have to play the best to be the best."

Kennedy played without cleanup hitter Devon Jacobus, who missed the game with a sore back.
