Prairie swipes wild twinbill from Warriors

Landen Akers was standing on third base with two outs in the top of the seventh inning Wednesday night when Cedar Rapids Washington assistant coach Javier Rivera came over from the third-base coaching box with a startling idea.

"Steal home," Rivera told Akers.

Huh?

"Yeah, I thought it was risky at first," said Akers, a speedy sophomore. "But then I thought I had a chance. I had to go."

Prairie drops costly twinbill to Wahlert

The Cedar Rapids Prairie baseball team did not realize its shiny new spot in the Class 4A rankings this week came with a curse.

The Hawks popped into the IHSBCA rankings in the No.8 spot Monday and promptly got rained out Monday night. On Tuesday, they lost 8-0 to North Scott in a hastily scheduled game. And on Friday, the wheels came off the wagon.

Prairie squandered a pair of seemingly comfortable leads Friday and lost a Mississippi Valley Conference twinbill to Dubuque Wahlert, 5-4 in eight innings and 11-9, at the wind-swept Prairie field.

The twin defeats cost Prairie the No.1 seed in the Class 4A substate tournament that begins in three weeks and dearly cost the Hawks in the conference race.

No.8 Prairie spanked by North Scott

Cedar Rapids Prairie jumped into the Class 4A baseball rankings Monday for the first time this season, but the celebration did not last very long.

The No.8 Hawks collected only two hits Tuesday and were blanked by North Scott, 8-0, in a non-conference game at the Prairie field.

North Scott (8-12) snapped Prairie's eight-game winning streak and dropped the Hawks to 17-7 for the season.
