Hanna suffered mild concussion, should be OK

Prairie quarterback Jace Hanna suffered a "mild concussion" during Friday night's football game against Jefferson and probably will not play against Dubuque Hempstead this week.

Hanna was treated and released at Mercy Medical Center Friday night.

"He's going to be OK, I think," Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey said Saturday. "Everything came out well as far as the CAT scan."

Hanna was hurt with six minutes left in the game after throwing an interception.

"He ended up getting hit from behind. He got his bell rung," Morrissey said.

Morrissey thought it might have been a helmet-to-helmet collision with a Jefferson defender.

Hanna was treated on the field, then helped to the sideline. He was transported to Mercy Medical Center by ambulance.

Morrissey received a picture from Hanna's mother, showing Hanna smiling and wearing sunglasses after being treated at the hospital.

"He's such a tough kid," Morrissey said. "He's played through broken bones before."

When Hanna was a sophomore, he played three games with a broken hand, according to Morrissey.

Hanna was treated on the field for 10 minutes Friday night while the game was delayed. He sat up, then was told to lie down again.

"He tried to get up and walk it off," Morrissey said. "He was definitely out of it."

Morrissey said Hanna was able to answer questions and was never unconscious.

Hanna completed 12 of 22 passes for 214 yards and two touchdowns in the 29-17 victory over Jefferson. He has completed 62 of 128 passes for 955 yards and five touchdowns in seven games for the Hawks (1-6).

Peyton Wagner replaced Hanna at quarterback against the J-Hawks and will start against Hempstead this week. Wagner, a senior, has completed 9 of 18 passes for 161 yards and three TDs this season.

Morrissey said Hanna will be withheld from this week's game as a precautionary measure.

Morrissey said that receiver Demetrius Harper might be cleared to play against Hempstead this week. Harper has been sidelined since early in the season with a broken collarbone.
