Refs' calls blur Prairie loss to IC West

Their names are Joel Hibbs, Troy Hibbs, Neil McCubbin, John Koop and Brian Crawford.

If you cheer for the Cedar Rapids Prairie football team, keep their names in mind and don't invite them to any of your parties or offer them a free bag of popcorn.

They were the officials at John Wall Field Friday night and if you were there, you know it was a night filled with mass confusion due to missed calls, overturned calls, no calls and calls that left you scratching your head.

The referees may not have cost Prairie a chance to upset No.6 Iowa City West, but they sure did not help in any way, shape or form.

Iowa City West escaped, 21-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle that had Prairie fans booing the officials much of the night.

No.1 Saints stuff Prairie, 23-0

The Xavier Saints like to keep things simple on defense.

Simply outstanding. Simply impressive. And simply suffocating.

The top-ranked Saints held Prairie to 92 yards of total offense Friday night and squashed the Hawks, 23-0, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Xavier.

Cougars knock off Prairie, 28-24

Cedar Rapids Kennedy junior running back Terrence Hall saw daylight and led the Cougars to a 28-24 win over Cedar Rapids Prairie Friday at John Wall Memorial Field.

Hall led a powerful Kennedy rushing attack with 99 yards on 13 carries. Miles Moa added 91 yards and Logan Wedo 79 yards as the Cougars ground it out, especially when it mattered the most, to improve to 2-0.

"We weren't going to let them stop our run game," Hall said. "We were going to pound it down their throat. That's what we do. That's what we work on in practice. It pays off."

Prairie clips J-Hawks in opener, 24-7

The Prairie Hawks were struggling with their running game Thursday night when they decided to put 630 pounds of muscle on the right side of the offensive line.

Their names are Bryce Meeker and Christian Ohrt, and the two behemoths helped Prairie grind out a 24-7 victory over Jefferson in the season opener at Kingston Stadium on a humid night in southwest Cedar Rapids.

Meeker, who stands 6-foot-6 and 285 pounds, normally plays offensive tackle, but he shifted to guard to make room for Ohrt, a Jefferson transfer who measures 6-foot-8 and 345. They helped pave the way for a rushing attack that netted 246 yards as "Air Prairie" took most of the night off.

Tiedtke returning to Kingston as friendly foe

Blake Tiedtke has some terrific memories of running onto the football field at Kingston Stadium as a member of the Jefferson J-Hawks during his playing days at the turn of the century, but he'll be returning Thursday night with a team that wants to beat his alma mater.

Tiedtke, 31, was an elite all-state running back for Jefferson in 2000 when he rushed for 1,300 yards, scored 18 touchdowns, set five school records and helped the J-Hawks tie for the Mississippi Valley Conference title.

Tiedtke joined the Prairie Hawks as an assistant coach this year, so he'll be on the opposing sideline Thursday when Prairie and Jefferson tangle in the season opener at Kingston.
