Hanna shines in Shrine Bowl

CEDAR FALLS - One quarterback had a day he will always remember. Another had one he would like to forget.

But for both Cedar Rapids Prairie's Jace Hanna and Cedar Rapids Xavier's Reggie Schulte, Saturday's 41st edition of the Shrine Bowl at the UNI-Dome was put in the proper perspective as just one part of a special week.

Hanna was likely playing football for the final time. He completed a pair of touchdown passes of 32 yards each to West Des Moines Valley's Clint Boffeli as the South rolled to a 28-0 win over the North before an estimate crowd of 3,500 at the UNI-Dome.

On the other side of the field, it wasn't the best of days for Schulte. He was under constant pressure from a swarming South defense and ended up throwing five interceptions, including one that was returned for a touchdown. He completed just 9-of-25 passes for 91 yards.

Shrine Bowl is 'bittersweet' for Hanna

Jace Hanna is excited about playing in the 41st Annual Shrine Bowl on July 27, but it's also tinged with a little sadness.

The Shrine Bowl will be the last organized football game of Hanna's career, unless he changes his mind and decides to try football in college at some point.

As it stands now, Hanna will report to Upper Iowa University in August to begin classes and become a member of the UIU basketball team.

His football days will be done after he plays quarterback for the South squad in the Shrine game.

Harper picks Iowa Western for football

Cedar Rapids Prairie receiver Demetrius Harper has committed to play football at Iowa Western Community College, the Iowa Prep Sports website has reported.

Harper caught 59 passes for 685 yards this season and scored nine touchdowns, including two TDs on kickoff returns.

Harper helped Prairie finish 8-4 and reach the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Iowa Western won the NJCAA national title this year with a 27-7 victory over Butler (Kan.).

Edmonds will play football at UNI

Jarred Edmonds, an all-state receiver for Cedar Rapids Prairie, committed to the University of Northern Iowa on Wednesday, according to a report on the Iowa Prep Sports website.

Edmonds was named second team all-state in Class 4A by the Iowa Newspaper Association. He caught 63 passes for 1,267 yards and 16 touchdowns.

Edmonds helped the Hawks reach the third round of the playoffs and finish with an 8-4 record.

He can sign his national letter-of-intent in February.
