Hanna stars as Prairie rips Wahlert

DUBUQUE - The Prairie Hawks took immediate control in Dubuque Friday night and downed Wahlert, 44-14, in Mississippi Valley action at the Rock Bowl.

The Hawks scored three touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the game to take a quick 20-0 advantage and scored again late in the opening frame.

“We had a good week of practice this week and came out aggressive and ready to play tonight,” said Prairie Coach Mike Morrissey. “We were able to get a lot of deserving kids some game-time experience tonight.”

On the second play of the game, Jace Hanna completed a 61-yard touchdown pass to Demetrius Harper. Samuel Drysdale missed his first extra point of the season and the score was 6-0.

Wahlert’s second play from scrimmage was intercepted by Mitch Dellamuth, who had a nice return of 22 yards to give the offense the ball on the Wahlert 28-yard line. On the first play, Hanna hit Jarred Edmonds for a 28-yard touchdown. Drysdale added the point and it was 13-0.

Prairie (3-2, 1-1) recovered an onside kick and six plays later Hanna hit Edmonds again from 17 yards out. The kick was good, and just like that the rout was on.

Sitting out last week against Iowa City West due to injury, Hanna played barely more than a quarter and put up some numbers that many quarterbacks would like to have for a game. He completed 9 of 13 passes for 197 yards and four touchdowns.

Hanna threw one touchdown pass to Harper, two to Edmonds and a 78-yard strike to Jesse Vizzini.

“We just prepared well and everyone executed,” said Hanna. “The line played great and I just have a lot of great receivers to throw to.”

Hanna was replaced by Trey Beckman, whose job it was to basically manage the rest of the game. Beckman went 7 for 8 for 112 yards and two touchdowns. He hit Caleb Davison for a 25-yard touchdown and Kentrel Smith with a 6-yarder.

“It just felt great to just go out and score a lot of points,” said Beckman. “Just get out there and get the victory.”

With the score 41-0 at halftime, all the Hawks had to do was coast to the finish line.

In the second half, Drysdale connected on a 33-yard field goal to close out the scoring for the Hawks.

Wahlert (1-4, 0-2) had no answer. The Prairie defense came up with five nterceptions and a fumble recovery and Wahlert’s starting quarterback left the game in the second quarter with a shoulder separation.

It was domination.

“I was very pleased with our defense and our receivers did a nice job of catching the ball, but we still have some areas to work on and improve,” said Morrissey.

Prairie hosts No. 2 Cedar Falls next Friday at John Wall Field.

Hanna watches as West thumps Prairie

IOWA CITY - Iowa City West has been used to creating touchdowns through the air this season. On Friday night, they continued this tradition but got creative.

Trojan running back Ezra Reiners borrowed the job of quarterback Nate Boland and threw a 60-yard halfback pass for a touchdown, propelling the fifth-ranked Trojans by Prairie 58-27 at the Iowa City West field.

In the place of their usual heavy dose of pass, the Trojans (4-0) came out pounding the ball on the ground. When Reiners assumed his natural role of tailback, he dominated. He racked up 167 yards and three touchdowns for the game. As a team, West accumulated a whopping 437 yards of rushing.

“We really pushed our offensive line this week to put out a statement and they did,” said Reiners. “This game gives our O-line a lot of confidence.”

Trojan fullback Micah Kelsay got the scoring started with 5:32 left in the first quarter with a 5-yard bulldoze of a run into the end zone.

“We have seen some things on the scouting report that said they are capable of running the ball,” said Prairie Coach Mike Morrisey. “Obviously we game-planned a lot around their two big receivers. But we weren’t able to make tackles when we had opportunities.”

On the offensive side of the ball, Prairie had trouble getting anything going. Much of this can be attributed to the absence of starting quarterback Jace Hanna, who was watching the game from the sideline on crutches.

Sophomore Trey Beckman and junior Dylan Kuchemann were his replacements, and they did their best with the situation. But the Trojan defense didn’t offer much sympathy for these young quarterbacks.

“They were tough,” said Morrisey. “They were physical and fast and just a good team. It took our quarterbacks some time to settle down a little bit and try and find a rhythm."

Early in the second quarter, Reiners scampered into the end zone with a 4-yard run to push the Trojans ahead 14-0. Then West got creative.

Boland handed off to Reiners, who steered out to the left, looking like a sweep play. But instead of turning it upfield, Reiners stepped back and launched the ball downfield to Jeremy Morgan. The ball was underthrown but the talented Morgan stopped in his tracks, snatched it and proceeded to outrun the Prairie defense for 60 yards and the touchdown.

“We worked on it a couple of times in practice,” said Reiners. “We drew it up and it worked out. I threw it up to a big guy and all he had to do was go up and get it.”

The jack-of-all-trades back rolled for another touchdown from 43 yards out in the third quarter, giving him his third of the night.

Despite a 21-0 halftime deficit, Prairie (2-2) kept clawing. Demetrius Harper took the opening kickoff of the second half 90 yards for a touchdown to get the Hawks on the board.

Then, Prairie wide receiver Jarred Edmonds single-handedly proceeded to torch the Trojan secondary. He caught a 44-yard pass from Beckman, which counted as the first positive passing yards for Prairie in the game. Three plays later, Beckman and Edmonds connected again in the corner of the end zone making the score 37-13.

On Prairie's next position, Edmonds caught a 69-yard score from Kuchemann, who had been rotating with Beckman. On their next possession, Kuchemann tossed another long touchdown to Harper, covering 68 yards for the score.

“We got comfortable and our guys started to get into a rhythm,” said Morrisey. “Our kids fought hard and never quit and we have to give them credit for that.”

Polished Saints belt Prairie, 48-14

No high school team has ever played a perfect football game, but the Xavier Saints came pretty darn close Friday night at John Wall Field.

There were A's and A-pluses all over the place.

The seventh-ranked Saints excelled in all facets of the game and belted the Prairie Hawks, 48-14, in a Mississippi Valley Conference battle of unbeaten clubs.

Jelinek Bowl? Nope, just Saints vs. Hawks

Craig Jelinek does not want Friday night's big football game between the Xavier Saints and Prairie Hawks to be about him in any way, shape or form.

It looks like he'll get his wish.

Jelinek, 60, compiled a 106-96 record in 21 years as Prairie's head football coach. He retired after the 2010 campaign, but returned to the sidelines this season as a volunteer assistant for Xavier.

The Saints visit Prairie Friday night, which means Jelinek will stand on the visitor's sideline and will head into the visitor's locker room at John Wall Field after spending all those years as head coach of the home team.

Prairie's Harper goes crazy against Kennedy

Crazy, crazy, crazy.

How else to describe a football game that featured 74 points, 794 total yards, 40 first downs and a stunning 90-yard kickoff return for a touchdown?

One word. Crazy.

Prairie senior DeMetrius Harper caught 13 passes for 134 yards and two touchdowns, and added the kickoff return for a score that led the Hawks past Kennedy, 41-33, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference non-divisional game at Kingston Stadium.
