Poor shooting sinks Warriors

Minnetonka High School might be the best 3-and-8 team in Minnesota. And they know how to play defense.

Friday night at the Warrior Gym, the Skippers limited all-state guard Josh Oglesby to a dismal 1-for-8 3-point shooting night and won a 60-51 non-conference game.

“We were able to make Oglesby work for every shot he took and that was part of the plan,” Minnetonka Coach Tom Dasovich said. “We know what a great player he is. The University of Iowa is getting a good one.”

With Iowa Coach Fran McCaffery looking on, Oglesby hit just 5-of-17 shots and scored 16 points, five below his average. Minnetonka employed a stifling straight-up man-to-man defense, forcing the 6-foot-6 senior into some tough shots.

Oglesby came into the game averaging 21.3 points and shooting a remarkable 62 percent from behind the arc. He scored only one point in the fourth quarter.

Washington connected on just 3-of-18 3-pointers (16 percent) and hit on 37 percent overall (18-for-49). Minnetonka shot 49 percent.

“I had a feeling they would be really physical,” Warrior boss Brad Metzger said. “Their record didn’t matter based on the Minneapolis suburban area because they are going to face tough teams every night. They were physical and blue collar.”

Metzger said he thought rebounding was the big difference.

“They must have had at least 20 points on second-chance points and that is what killed us,” he said.

The Skippers won the rebound battle, 32-21.

Wes Washpun, who hit a 28-foot shot to win a game over Iowa City West on Tuesday night, played well and had a game-high 25 points, including 16 in the first half. He also had seven rebounds and three steals for Washington.

Oglesby and Washpun scored 41 of their team’s 51 total points.

A flagrant foul on Sean Bredl with 3:37 to play was a turning point. The Skippers held a 49-45 lead when Tommy McDermott drove to the basket, was fouled and made one of two free throws.

Minnetonka got the ball and scored a put-back layup on the ensuing possession to increase the margin to 52-45. The final score was the biggest lead of the game for either team.

Minnetonka came ready to play after facing a very tough schedule to start the season.

“Minnesota high school basketball is really good, especially in the big schools,” Dasovich said. “We played a very tough schedule and we played a lot of the top teams in Minnesota, so our record is a little bit deceiving.”

The Warriors (5-3) face Chaska High School at the Target Center in Minneapolis on Saturday at 5 p.m. as part of the Timberwolves Shootout. The Warriors depart for a long bus ride at 8 a.m. Saturday.

“It will be a neat experience for the kids,” Metzger said.

McDermott led Minnetonka with 20 points, Nick Latzke added 17 and Andrew Tumblad had 12.

The score was 34-34 at halftime, but Minnetonka outscored the hosts 26-17 in the second half.
