Oglesby, Washpun shine

IOWA CITY –  University of Iowa men's basketball coach Fran McCaffery watched intently from near midcourt Friday night as future Hawkeye Josh Oglesby led his Cedar Rapids Washington Warriors to a 58-47 victory over Iowa City High.

But Oglesby, who scored a game high 25 points, wasn't the only player Iowa's first-year head coach was eying.

Washington senior Wes Washpun, who continues to draw interest from college hoops programs both big and small, put on a show of his own against the Little Hawks.

The 6-foot-1 guard scored 21 and hit some big shots down the stretch as the Warriors (8-4, 6-2) pulled away from their scrappy hosts.

“Their record doesn't show their talent level,” Washpun said of the now 0-13 Little Hawks. “They came out and played very hard tonight and caught us by surprise in the first half. We came out a little slow but picked it up with our defensive intensity in the second half, and I think that's what got us the win.”

Washpun scored 16 of his points in the second half, including two on a layup off  an assist from Oglesby with 1:55 left to play in the third quarter,  putting the Warriors ahead 38-37.

Washington never looked back, outscoring the Little Hawks 20-10 over the final 10 minutes of play thanks in large part to the play of Washpun and teammate Alex Carr.

“We've got Washpun, who can get up top there and make things difficult for people. He did that. And we've got a speedy guy (Carr) who can run the baseline and get a hand in the face,” Washington Coach Brad Metzger said.

“So we knew we had that going for us. It was just a matter of how long we were going to take before deciding to use it. Fortunately, we did decide to use it.”

The Little Hawks led 28-27 at the half.

“We came in the locker room at half time and Coach Metzger chewed us out,” Oglesby said. “We didn't have things where we needed to be in the first half, but we made the right adjustments.”

Metzger said he broke the second-half game plan down to three areas: stops in man, scoring a few baskets and changing defenses.

“We started trapping more on the wings and got in our 1-3-1 trap, and I think that disrupted their offensive flow a little bit. And that was the key,” Washpun said.

That defensive pressure led to back-to-back layups by Washpun in the fourth quarter that helped the Warriors begin to pull away from the Little Hawks. City High had one last push in it, thanks to buckets by Andrew McNulty and Ronald Thompson, that cut the deficit to five. But they would get no closer than that in the final minutes. Washington converted six of nine free-throw to seal City High's fate.

Following the game, Oglesby spent several minutes speaking with his future head coach. One of the main topics was Washpun's play.

“I've been playing with him for a long time. I've been talking to Coach McCaffery about him and trying to get him a scholarship (offer),” he said.

“He's got so much upside to his game. He's so athletic. He can defend the best player on the other team and shut him down. I just hope Coach McCaffery gives him a shot because he's a great kid and an even better kid off the court.”

Washpun, who picked up an offer from North Dakota State last week, said he continues to hear from McCaffery as well as from several other programs but is in no hurry to make a decision regarding his future.

“I'm probably not going to make my decision until the spring,” he said. “I'm going to take some visits and I'm just going to see how the chips fall.”

Metzger said Washpun “just needs to keep doing what he's doing” and things will end well for the senior.

Washington won the sophomore game 65-33.
