WATERLOO - Allison Jasper and Kylie DeWees of Xavier had to play each other in the championship match of the Class 1A regional tennis tournament Thursday, but it had a happy ending.
Both girls advanced to the state tournament June 5-6 at the University of Iowa.
Jasper defeated DeWees, 6-1, 6-3, in the finals after both players won three straight matches in the preliminary rounds. The champion and runner-up both advance to the state meet, so they had a friendly match knowing they were both winners.
The Xavier doubles teams of Claire Bouchard/Jeanne Bouchard and Emma Deignan/Katie Neumeyer won their opening-round matches but fell in the second round.
