Michelle Mack belted a grand-slam in the sixth inning Wednesday to help Mount Mercy top Clarke, 5-2, in the first game of their Heart of America Conference doubleheader at Busse Field.
The Mustangs took the nightcap, 5-1, on a rainy evening in northeast Cedar Rapids for the sweep.
The twin-killing lifted Mount Mercy into first place in the North Division standings with an 8-2 record in the conference. The Mustangs are 15-7 overall for the campaign.
Mount Mercy trailed, 2-1, in the sixth inning of the opener when Mack lofted a fly ball over the fence in left field with the bases loaded. Tawny Menster (6-0) retired Clarke in the top of the seventh to finish the victory.
Emily Oler belted a solo home run over the fence in center field to help the Mustangs in Game 2. Madelyn Irwin (4-1) tossed a complete game for the victory.
Clarke fell to 3-14 overall and 1-11 in the league.
