Madelyn Irwin pitched a one-hitter for the Mount Mercy softball team Friday, and then Jayna Witzany topped that by tossing a no-hitter in the second game of their doubleheader against Robert Morris.
The Mustangs won the first game, 6-0, as Irwin allowed only one hit in the seven-inning ballgame. She struck out four batters and did not walk anyone.
Mount Mercy took the nightcap, 8-0, in six innings on the no-hitter by Witzany. She struck out seven batters and walked two.
The sweep lifted the Mustangs to 22-18 overall and snapped their seven-game losing streak. Robert Morris fell to 2-28.
Jolona Shield went 2-for-3 with three RBIs and scored twice in the 6-0 victory in the opener. Tawny Menster was 3-for3 with two RBI. Jess Heick was 2-for-3 and scored twice. Michelle Mack was also 2-for-3.
Heick went 3-for-4 with three RBI in the 8-0 triumph in Game 2. Payton Bruner was 2-for-3 with a double, home run and scored twice. Morgan Braughton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
