Wash falls to Regina 3-point barrage

IOWA CITY - It was senior night on Saturday for the Iowa City Regina boys basketball team. It has long been a Regal tradition for the parents of the senior players to attempt 3-point baskets in honor of their sons before the game.

The dads of the Regal players went a whopping 0-for-8 from behind the arc. In the actual game, their sons had better luck.

Regina set a school record with 12 3-point field goals in the first half, and defeated Cedar Rapids Washington, 74-58, in a non-conference game at the Regina gym.

On Regina’s first two offensive possessions, Danny Amelon nailed 3-pointers. It proved to be a recurring theme for the Regals.

The two teams bolted out of the starting gates, and after Amelon’s two treys, Washington’s David Tann and Cybyran Moa nailed consecutive 3-point baskets.

But Regina kept its foot on the gas pedal, and finshed the first quarter with seven field goals from long range. They added five more in the second quarter to secure the school record.

The lead for the Regals at intermission was 49-28 and Washington Coach Brad Metzger put it bluntly when asked about their approach to the second half.

“We just tried to guard people better,” said Metzger. “That’s it.”

The Regals were on pace to score nearly 100 points, but the Warriors were able to guard better in the second half, stopping Regina at 74.

But the game was already put out of reach because of the Regals’ first-half explosion from beyond the arc.

Tann started the scoring off in the second half for the Warriors with a layup, making the score 49-30, but that is as close as they would get until garbage time.

The Regals poured in a few more 3-pointers and maintained their lead with smart offensive play.Regina finished the game with 15 treys.

The Warriors (0-16) have yet to win a ballgame this season, and it would have been easy for them to lie down in the second half. But they kept fighting until the final buzzer.

“Im glad we were able to battle in the second half,” said Metzger. “We were able to come out and keep working hard and never give up and that is important. So I am proud of them for that.”

Warrior junior guard Brock Butterfield encompassed Washington’s never give up attitude, scoring 10 points in the second half and 16 for the game.

Kennedy manhandles Wash boys, 46-23

Washington scored the opening basket of its contest with in cross-town rival Kennedy.

But the 2-0 lead was the only lead the Warriors had all night. Kennedy whipped Washington, 46-23, Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference boys basketball game at Washington.

The third quarter really told the story of the Warriors (0-15, 0-12) for this game and season as they were held scoreless for the entire eight minutes and nearly another three minutes in the fourth quarter.

“We don’t handle pressure well,” Washington Coach Brad Metzger said. “It makes it hard to get into anything."

The Cougars (12-4, 7-4) play sixth-ranked Linn-Mar, top-ranked Iowa City West and Jefferson all in the next week. They host the Lions Saturday.

“We will need a total team effort both mentally and physically,” Kennedy Coach Bob Fontana said about the upcoming schedule.

With a tough slate ahead, the Cougars rested their starters for the entire fourth quarter. Washington also sat its starting five.

“The rest helps. It also helps to get others some time,” Fontana said. “You never know when you will have to go 9 or 10 deep.”

The benches played an even fourth quarter giving both teams back end of the bench some playing experience.

After Washington scored the game's first bucket, the Cougars went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Poor shooting from Kennedy allowed the Warriors to hang around as they trailed just 10-6 after the first.

“We had some good looks and didn’t hit shots. We also had some bad looks,” Fontana said. “If we are getting good shots we need to keep shooting them and not force bad shots.”

Kennedy picked things up late in the second quarter, using a full court trap to get turnovers and quick points. The Cougars converted easy opportunities to push their lead to double digits going into the half with a 25-13 lead.

The second half was dominated by the Cougar defense as they continued to force turnovers -- 24 in the game.

“I really liked our approach in the second half,” Fontana said. “We followed the game plan both offensively and defensively.”

The Warriors look to get in the win column Saturday at Iowa City Regina.

“We won’t think about this one much,” Metzger said about moving forward. “If there was any positive it was getting the kids on the bench some minutes.”

Washington was led by Peter Holmes and Jason Oney with six and five points, respectively, off the bench.

Kennedy was paced by Josiah Coleman's 12 points.

KENNEDY (46): Darius Fuller 2 1-4 5, Trevor Heitland 1 0-0 2, Cody Bell 1 1-2 4, Elliott Christians 3 1-1 7, Josiah Coleman 4 2-2 12, Benjamin Struss 2 0-0 4, Patrick Martin 0 0-0 0, Alex Hayden 1 0-0 3, Joshua Jahlas 0 1-2 1, Blake Murdock 0 2-2 2, Riley Fergus 1 0-0 2, Johnathon Koelling 0 0-0 0, AJ Carter 1 0-0 2, Taylor Oltmann 1 0-0 2, Andrew Johnson 0 0-0 0. J-Hawks race past Warriors, 71-42

Jefferson used an early surge to handle Washington with ease Friday night, 71-42, in a boys basketball game at Jefferson.

The first quarter set the tempo and the second quarter all but put the Warriors away as the J-Hawks pushed their way to a 39-15 lead at halftime.

“We wanted to push the ball. We know we can run,” senior Tyler Hemphill said. “We wanted to mess up what they do and get to our game.”

The J-Hawks (11-3, 7-2) used an aggressive man-to-man defense to pressure the Warrior ball handlers. They troubled the Warriors even more by sending a second defender at the ball after the first pass, or as soon as Washington crossed half court.

“We wanted to try to apply pressure. They are athletic but don’t handle ball pressure well,” Jefferson Coach Stu Ordman said. “They burned us a few times but I thought it worked well.”

Hemphill, who has played with a torn ACL all year, helped the J-Hawks put the pressure on with energetic play.

“Hemphill had a great game,” Ordman said. “He had lots of energy, was quick to the ball, and played really unselfish.”

Jefferson put together big runs early in both of the first two quarters and shut down the Warrior offense by holding them to 15 points on just five field goals.

“It has been common for us,” Warrior Coach Brad Metzger said of the offensive struggles. “It is something we struggle with. That is just the way it is.”

Senior playmaker Taylor Olson led the J-Hawk push with 11 of his game-high 18 points in the first half and distributed the ball well in the second half.

“We have some great guards so we can spread them out,” Hemphill said. “TO finds us and we just do what we do.”

Washington slowed the J-Hawks in the second half with the use of a 1-3-1 zone.

“I was a little upset, we should know how to attack the 1-3-1,” Ordman said. “We got it together, moved the ball well, and TO threw some incredible passes to set guys up.”

After a timeout the J-Hawks settled in as Olson distributed the ball to a variety of teammates and the J-Hawks extended their lead to 30 after the third quarter.

Despite the 1-3-1 slowing down the fast paced, up tempo offense in the second half the J-Hawks were in control from the start and were able to empty the bench in the fourth quarter.

“We did some different things,” Metzger said. “We probably should have done it  (the 1-3-1 zone) from the start.”

The J-Hawks got 17 points from hot handed junior Ky Kramer. Hemphill joined Olson and Kramer in double figures with 14.

“Ky, Alec (Saunders), Crey (Creighton Robinson), TO, Jacob (Olson) can all heat up from the outside,” Ordman said about his shooters' contributions. “It would be nice if we could get them all clicking at the same time down the stretch.”

The Warriors (0-12, 0-10) were led by Cybryan Moa's 13 points.

The Warriors will try to find a win Saturday when they visit Western Dubuque.

The road for the J-Hawks gets tougher from here as they host an improving Xavier team Saturday, followed up with trips to 5th ranked Cedar Falls and top ranked Iowa City West next week.

“The road gets a lot tougher with Xavier, Iowa City West, and Cedar Falls coming up,” Ordman said.
