Warriors' defense stifles Senior again

DUBUQUE – Once again, Cedar Rapids Washington leaned on its pressure defense to win a game down the stretch.

And for the second time in 10 days, Dubuque Senior was a victim.

Washington advanced to the Class 4A substate final with a convincing 63-41 victory over the Rams Friday at Nora Gymnasium.

It was the second road victory for Washington at Senior. The Warriors defeated the Rams, 55-50, on Feb. 15.

Senior ends the season with a 10-12 record.

The Warriors (16-8) will meet Dubuque Hempstead, who posted a 58-54 road upset of No. 5 Cedar Rapids Kennedy in the other substate 4 semifinal.

Washington overcame a small halftime deficit and put together a monster second half offensively. The Warriors outscored Senior by a 41-17 margin over the last 16 minutes and forced Senior into 15 second-half turnovers.

“At the beginning of the year, we were playing close to six guys,” Washington Coach Brad Metzger said. “Now, I feel like I can throw nine guys out there and get some fresher bodies.

“(The press) is not something we’ll do for 32 minutes, but it’s something we’ll look at doing over the last 12 minutes and the end of the game.”

Josh Oglesby scored a game-high 25 points for Washington, while point guard Wes Washpun added 20 and harassed Senior’s guards throughout the game.

Cyb Moa stepped up and provided a third scoring option for the Warriors. Moa finished with 14 points and was 9-of-14 from the free-throw line.

“It’s huge when we get a third scorer. Bottom line.,” Metzger said. “Josh and Wes, through 24 games, have worked extremely hard and done all kinds of things.

“The key to some of our biggest wins have been the third guy. If we can get a third guy in double figures, it will be big for us.”

Josh Weeber, Senior’s leading scorer, scored 26 points in the team’s first meeting. On Friday, Weeber tallied 13 points in the first half, but the Warriors shut down the Rams’ dynamic forward down the stretch.  He had only two points in the second half.

Oglesby credited the Warriors’ box-and-1 and 1-3-1 zone defenses in slowing Weeber’s offensive production over the final two quarters.

“We really focused our defense on (Weeber),” Oglesby said. “We just confused him and got up in his pants. I’ve played in AAU ball with him, and I saw guys getting in his shorts and frustrating him.

“I thought that’s what we should do tonight. He got his points, but he didn’t get 26.”

Washington and Hempstead met on Jan. 25 in Dubuque. The Warriors came away with a 46-33 victory, but the Mustangs’ 3-2 zone was able to hold Oglesby to 13 points on 4-of-11 shooting.

“It’s the playoffs, now,” Oglesby said. “You’ve got to play who you got to play. If Hempstead is going to beat Kennedy, you can’t come into the game thinking you’re going to win because you beat them by 13 last time.

“We just got to play each game like it’s your last and give it all you have.”

Moa, one of three juniors in Washington’s starting lineup, hopes he can help his senior teammates Oglesby and Washpun return to the Class 4A State Tournament in Des Moines. He will have an opportunity on Tuesday night at the U.S. Cellular Center.

“I want to get them back there,” Moa said.

Washpun gets offer from Missouri State

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Wes Washpun has been offered a scholarship to play basketball at Missouri State.

Washpun said Tuesday he is seriously considering the offer, but wants to visit Missouri State and possibly other schools in the next few weeks before making a decision.

Missouri State Coach Cuonzo Martin called Washpun Monday night and made the offer, shortly after Washpun had scored 21 points and helped Washington beat Clinton in the quarterfinals of the Class 4A substate tournament.

"I just thought it was another call, and to get the offer like that was pretty exciting," he said. "It's definitely exciting news and I'm very appreciative of the offer."

Washpun, a 6-foot-1 point guard, is averaging 17.7 points, 5.7 rebounds, 4 assists, 3.4 steals and 2.2 blocked shots for the Warriors (15-8).

Washpun also has offers from North Dakota, North Dakota State and South Dakota State. "I'm still thinking I'm going to wait and take all my visits after the season is over before I make my decision," he said.

The Iowa Hawkeyes have expressed interest, but have not offered a scholarship. Northern Iowa offered Washpun a scholarship that would have started in 2012 instead of 2011, meaning Washpun would have been a walk-on next season, but UNI withdrew its offer last fall after Washpun said he was not ready to decide.

Missouri State, located in Springfield, Mo., is currently tied for first place in the Missouri Valley Conference standings at 13-3 in the league and 21-7 overall. The Bears are in the same league with UNI and Drake and would make two trips to the state each season.

Washpun is academically eligible to compete in NCAA Division I basketball as a freshman next season, according to Washington Coach Brad Metzger.

Metzger said he is confident Washpun will have a successful college career.

"Athleticism like that can't be taught," said Metzger. "The things he needs to develop, he can get in a gym and do that. But how fast he is and how he can move laterally, anticipate, his arm length, his vertical leap ... those are things you can't teach."

Washpun shoots 55.3 percent from the field, but has struggled at the foul line at 52.2 percent this season.

Washpun said Martin has watched the Warriors practice this season and attended Washington's game against Waterloo West this month. He said there is no deadline for accepting the offer. High school seniors can sign letters-of-intent in April.

"No, he didn't give me a deadline at all," said Washpun. "They still want me to take my official visit. They want me to visit down there and see the campus. He didn't really pressure me or extend me a deadline or anything like that."

Washpun said he has watched Missouri State games on television.

"They're a really good team," he said. "They play hard defense and they really get up and down the court. They said that's what they like about me and my game. So I'll go down there and check them out."

Washington plays in the substate semifinals at Dubuque Senior Friday night.

Oglesby, Washpun star in home finale

That darn 35-point rule in high school basketball probably cost Josh Oglesby a record Monday night, but that was OK with Oglesby and the Washington Warriors.

Oglesby, Wes Washpun and all the seniors enjoyed their final home game anyway.

Oglesby flipped in eight 3-pointers and Washpun performed another Jordan-esque monster jam as the Warriors drubbed Clinton, 70-31, in the Class 4A substate quarterfinals.

Oglesby made seven 3-pointers in the first half, within striking distance of the school record of nine triples set by Mike Penney against Davenport West in 2002. But Washington led by 35 points at halftime, 53-18, which triggered a continuous clock for the entire second half and limited Oglesby's playing time.

He hit his eighth 3-pointer in the third period, matching his personal best, but time flew by since the clock did not stop for fouls, free throws or substitutions. He finished the third quarter with eight treys and stayed there, because he did not play in the fourth period with the Warriors enjoying a romp.

Warriors find balance in season finale

Almost every night has been senior night for the Washington Warriors this season, with the talented senior duo of Josh Oglesby and Wesley Washpun leading the way.

So, naturally, that's who stepped forward when Washington actually held its Senior Night on Thursday, with the help of junior Sean Bredl.

Washpun, Oglesby and Bredl were too much for West Waterloo to stop, scoring 19, 18 and 20 points, respectively, in Washington's 72-49 win over the Wahawks.

"It is the best balance we have had all year, and that is the best part about it" Washington Coach Brad Metzger said. "We need more balance."

Washpun breathed life into the Warrior team in the first half as a one-man fastbreak, converting two steal and lay-ups in the second quarter along with a monster one-handed dunk over a Wahawk defender that brought the fans to their feet.

Oglesby, Washpun combine for 42

DUBUQUE – Cedar Rapids Washington wants to make another northbound trip on U.S. 151 in 10 days.

The Warriors hope Tuesday was a preview of things to come in Class 4A Substate 4.

Washington leaned on its one-two punch of Josh Oglesby and Wes Washpun to edge Dubuque Senior, 55-50, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Nora Gymnasium.

Oglesby and Washpun combined for 42 of Washington’s 55 points.

If it gets by Clinton on Monday in the first round of substate play, Washington (13-8) would return to Nora Gymnasium on Feb. 25 for a rematch with Senior.

The Rams (9-10), the substate’s No. 2 seed, have a first-round bye.

Washington Coach Brad Metzger doesn’t think the teams will see anything new from each other if a rematch does occur.
