Trojans Hand Warriors First Loss, 65-50

IOWA CITY -- Iowa City West Coach B.J. Mayer was working up a sweat on Tuesday night. He didn't need to be worried.

The No. 6-ranked Trojans used an 11-0 run to start the fourth quarter and a game-high 25 points from McKenzie Piper to hand No. 5 Washington its first loss of the season, 65-50 in Mississippi Valley Conference girls play.

"I was really happy to come out of here with a win," Mayer said. "Washington is a really good ball club. They give you so many problems with Tia (Dawson) inside, all the shooters outside, Jazz (Royster) is such a slasher. We executed our game plan pretty much to perfection."

Mayer called a timeout midway through a wild third quarter and took time to wipe the sweat from his brow. The Warriors had stormed back from a 12-point deficit, cutting it to 44-41. Iowa City West held the Warriors scoreless for three minutes to start the fourth frame, scoring 11 straight points, and Mayer finally felt like he could relax. The Trojans led by as many as 17 points before both coaches cleared the benches.

"We have a bunch of kids who can score," Mayer said. "We knew we were going to have to step up and play a lot better. We put some new stuff in over Christmas (hopefully) that they hadn't seen before and it kind of gave them fits with our little zone."

Iowa City West moved to 8-1 overall and 6-1 in the MVC. The lone loss was to Linn-Mar just before the Christmas break, 63-49. Washington, unbeaten through Christmas break for the first time in Coach Frank Howell's coaching career, fell to 9-1 overall and 6-1 in the league.

Piper was the lone Trojan in double-figure scoring, but was a one-woman wrecking crew with an array of jumpers, drives to the basket and moves inside. Mayer has high praise for the six-foot junior forward.

"She's a really nice player, really athletic and can get to the rim, and is able to shoot the three as well. She had a great game tonight," he said.

Iowa City West out-rebounded the Warriors 23-21 and forced the visitors into 17 turnovers. The Trojans won the fourth quarter 21-9.Howell was equally impressed with Piper and said he knew that Iowa City West would be difficult to defend.

"They are tough to guard," he said. "They have a difficult style with the dribble drive stuff they run. We will have to try and bounce back pretty fast because the next couple teams are pretty tough too."

The Warriors face Xavier and Linn-Mar next Monday and Thursday.

"Iowa City West is just coming off that stretch where they played Xavier and Linn-Mar and then us," Howell said. "We are going to see what we are made of and see if we can bounce back."

The Warriors were led by Tia Dawson with 16 points and 12 rebounds. Jazz Royster had nine points. Washington connected on just 4-of-21 three-point goals and hit just 32-percent from the floor.
