Franklin helps Wash girls trim Dubuque Senior

DUBUQUE - The seventh-ranked Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball team overcame a slow start and survived a scare Tuesday night by defeating Dubuque Senior, 65-58.

Sophomore Danielle Franklin led the visitors with a career-high 23 points, hitting 8 of 17 shots, including three 3-pointers. She added six rebounds and three assists.

Washington led 51-50 after three periods, then won the final quarter 14-8. Dubuque Senior led 7-0 to start the game and trailed by just three at halftime, 33-30.

“Danielle (Franklin) found her stroke and that was pretty key,” Washington assistant coach Jason Edwards said. “Dubuque Senior is a very young team and small and quick. They handled our pressure very well and hit a lot of 3-pointers.”

The Rams drained 6-of-18 3-pointers and were led by the sister combo of Kristie Sommers (21 points on a trio of 3-point bombs) and Katie Sommers (14 points).

Edwards said rebounding was a key component for the Warriors.

“We won the rebounding battle 44-24 and that was probably the difference in the game,” he said. “Kelli (Klaus) had seven, including six offensive, and Madison (Kramer) had 10 rebounds. Overall, we really hit the glass pretty hard.”

Washington collected an impressive 20 offensive rebounds and had three players in double-figure scoring with Franklin, Klaus (13 points) and Abby Herb (10 points, five rebounds) pacing the attack. Jazz Royster scored eight points and Brooke Foreman added five assists.

“We were down one with about five minutes to play," Edwards reported. "We got a couple of key turnovers and then got up four and hit some free throws down the stretch. It was a one or two possession game until the final minute or two.”

Washington hosts Prairie on Thursday night.
