Washington girls dunk Hempstead, 70-43

The fifth-ranked Washington Warriors won their 13th game in 16 tries Tuesday night in convincing fashion over Dubuque Hempstead, 70-43, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Washington.

“I thought overall it was a pretty good performance,” Washington Coach Frank Howell said. “We didn’t start the third quarter the way we wanted to, but we started the game very well and led 15-6 after the first quarter.”

Howell’s squad moved to 13-3 overall and 10-2 in the MVC. Hempstead dropped to 5-11 overall and 3-8 in league play.

Three players hit double-figure scoring for the Warriors. Janay Pritchett had a team-high 12 points, Ashley Piper added 11 and Tia Dawson had 10.

The Mustangs were led by Brittani Graves with a game-high 15 points.

Washington led at halftime, 36-15.

Washington was 26-of-80 from the floor (32 percent), 6-for-22 from 3-point range (27 percent) and 12-for-19 from the foul line (63 percent).

The Warriors won the rebounding battle, 33-32.

“I was encouraged by the way we played tonight,” Howell said. “We did a good job establishing the tempo of the game. We got out and ran really well and looked for each other.”
