Xavier, Wash girls net favorable draws

The Xavier Saints will not have to leave 42nd Street for the Class 4A regional girls basketball tournament this year, making a potential trip to the state tournament perhaps a little easier for them.

The Washington Warriors, on the other hand, will have to travel to Newton for the Class 5A regional finals if they advance that far, making their path to the state tournament a little harder.

Warriors stay at No.8 in girls poll

Xavier inched up two spots to No.6 in the Class 4A basketball poll released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

Xavier has been ranked as high as No.4 during the season, but slipped to eighth in last week's poll.  The Saints moved up after beating Kennedy and Dubuque Wahlert last week.

Washington held onto its No.8 ranking in Class 5A.

Ankeny replaced Mason City atop the Class 5A poll. The Mohawks dropped to second.

Franklin delivers in the clutch for Warriors

Cedar Rapids Washington passed the basketball eight times in the final 24 seconds Friday night before Dani Franklin got the ball in front of her own bench.

She let it fly just in time.

Franklin drilled a long 3-pointer at the buzzer as the No.8 Warriors stopped Prairie, 65-62, in an exciting Mississippi Valley Conference game at Prairie.
