Washington girls dominate Waterloo West

Washington was hitting on all cylinders and was in control from start to finish in a solid 79-58 home victory against Waterloo West Tuesday night.

The Warriors jumped out to a 23-10 first quarter lead behind a full-court defense that controlled West’s offense. Washington's aggressive offense and precision passing carved up the Wahawk defense like a Thanksgiving turkey.

“We run a trapping full court press,” said Washington Coach Frank Howell.  “That’s who we are.  It really bothered them in the first half, but they got some pretty quick baskets against us in the second half.

Hobbs helps Warriors trip Saints

The Stealth Bomber delivered her weapons at the right time Thursday night for the Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball team.

Aleena Hobbs hit a key 3-pointer and scored 16 points as the Warriors topped Xavier, 57-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Xavier.

Washington volleyball coach Kari Lombardi gave Hobbs the nickname of "Stealth Bomber" this fall because the 5-foot-10 junior is a good jumper who can slam the ball at the net and surprise opponents with her power.

Washington basketball coach Frank Howell hasn't come up with his own nickname for her yet.

"No, I guess I don't," he said. "That's unfortunate, because I usually come up with some pretty good nicknames.

"The Stealth Bomber is applicable to basketball, too."

The Warriors (8-2, 4-2) used key 3-pointers in the fourth period to gain the edge in a tight contest.

Abby Herb quietly signs with Mount Mercy

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Abby Herb did not want any big parties at school or any press conferences when she signed a letter-of-intent to play basketball at Mount Mercy University.

She's excited about the next step in her life and looking forward to playing for the Mustangs, but she's kind of shy and wanted to sign quietly last month.

"I just wanted to sign the paper without a bunch of people there and get all nervous and my hand would be shaking," she said.
