Warriors' defense shuts down Wahlert

DUBUQUE – The Washington Warriors wanted to hold Dubuque Wahlert to less than 50 points on Dec. 14. Mission accomplished.

Coach Frank Howell and his No. 6 ranked team used a 20-10 burst in the third quarter to defeat the Golden Eagles in a grind-it-out Mississippi Valley Conference game, 54-41.

“The big mission tonight was to try and keep them from breaking fifty,” Howell said. “We figured if we could keep them below fifty (points) we would have a good chance of winning the game.”

No Warrior got to double figures in scoring, but it was defense that paved the way for the Warriors’ seventh straight win.

Warriors defeat defending 3A state champs

They won and then got stuck in a blizzard Saturday (Dec. 11) in Sioux City. The Washington Warriors girls’ basketball team was forced to spend an extra night at the Hampton Inn, but Coach Frank Howell and his team didn’t seem to mind.

“We didn’t really have a way of getting out of town,” Howell said. “Every route that we could have tried would have been closed to us. And, even if it wasn’t closed to us, it probably wouldn’t have been very smart to try it,” Howell said.

The No. 6 Washington Warriors easily handled No. 11 Class 3A-ranked Sioux City Bishop Heelan, the defending 3A state champions, 67-42, earlier in the day. The win came on the heels of a solid 68-55 victory on Friday night over the 2009 4A state champion Sioux City North Stars, who were ranked No. 7 this week.

No. 6 Warriors topple No. 7 Sioux City North

The No. 6 Washington Warriors got a big win on the road Friday night (Dec. 10) when they knocked off No. 7 Sioux City North, the 2009 4A state champions, 68-55. Saturday at 3pm they face last year’s 3A champions in Sioux City Heelan.

“It is a good unusual for us right now,” Warriors Coach Frank Howell said of playing recent state champs on back to back nights. “It is a tall order, but I feel really good about the way we played tonight and it shows us what we are capable of doing.”

Howell called this a “first” in his coaching career. “I can’t remember it ever happening before. Or, maybe I don’t want to remember it.”

Warriors still No. 6, Xavier moves in to poll

A six-game winning streak to start the season has vaulted Xavier into the No. 10 spot in the Dec. 9 IGHSAU Class 4A rankings.

Xavier was unranked in the previous two polls.  The Saints (6-0) moved into the poll two days after beating Waterloo East, 64-8.  They are allowing only 26.7 points per game.

Xavier is the third Cedar Rapids-Marion metro area team in the top 10.  Linn-Mar (5-0) stayed in the No. 3 spot and Washington (4-0) is No. 6 again this week.

All three face tough tests this weekend.  Xavier hosts Kennedy (2-2) Friday and No. 13 West Des Moines Dowling (4-0) Saturday.

Linn-Mar and Washington are travel partners headed to Sioux City.  The Lions play Class 3A No. 11 Heelan (4-1) Friday and Class 4A No. 7 Sioux City North (4-0) Saturday.  Washington plays North Friday and Heelan Saturday.

Warriors remain unbeaten with convincing win

Frank Howell said he forgot to wear his lucky red sweater Tuesday night (Dec. 7). He didn’t need it.

The Washington Warriors remained unbeaten with a convincing 67-52 win over Dubuque Senior at the Warrior gym, but one thing seemed strange. Howell was wearing a blue sweater instead of his trademark red pullover.
