Hobbs will play hoops for Kohawks

Aleena Hobbs of Cedar Rapids Washington has decided to continue her basketball career at Coe College, she announced Monday.

"I've finally made my decision!," she said in an e-mail. "I've decided to attend Coe College and play basketball for Coach (Randi) Peterson.

"Looking forward to being a part of Coach P's program and getting a great education at Coe," she said. "I'll be close to home, so my family will be able to watch me play."

Peterson led the Kohawks to a 16-11 record this season and a berth in the conference finals.

Hobbs, 5-foot-10, averaged 16.4 points and 6.6 rebounds for the Warriors this season. She also collected 55 steals, 35 assists and 17 blocks.

Hobbs was named second team all-state in Class 5A, first team all-Metro and first team all-Mississippi Valley Conference. The Warriors finished 18-5 and won a conference title.

8 Metro girls make INA all-state

Eight players from the Metro area were named to the all-state girls basketball teams by the Iowa Newspaper Association Tuesday.

Dani Franklin of Washington was named first team all-state in Class 5A and Shelby Hembera was named first team all-state in Class 1A.

Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Aleena Hobbs of Washington were named second team all-state in Class 5A. Michalyn Mohr of Marion and Hayley Deutmeyer of Xavier were honored as second-team selections in Class 4A.

Franklin, Ollinger, Hembera make all-state

Dani Franklin of Washington, Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Shelby Hembera of Cedar Valley Christian have been named to the all-state girls basketball teams by the Des Moines Register.

Franklin, a 6-foot-1 senior, made first team all-state in Class 5A. She averaged 22.3 points and 5.8 rebounds for the Warriors this season.

Ollinger, a 6-2 sophomore, made third team all-state in Class 5A. She averaged 18.6 points and 7.4 rebounds for the J-Hawks.

Hembera, a 6-foot junior, was named first team all-state in Class 1A. She led the entire state in scoring and rebounding at 33.2 points and 16.4 rebounds.

Franklin named Athlete of Year in Metro

Cedar Rapids Washington senior Dani Franklin has been honored as the Athlete of the Year on the 2014 All-Metro girls basketball team.

Frank Howell of Washington was named the Coach of the Year.

Franklin, Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson and Katie Sommer of Linn-Mar were unanimous selection on the first team. Cyerra Hutchins of Prairie, Morgan Martin of Kennedy, Aleena Hobbs of Washington and Hayley Deutmeyer of Xavier joined them on the top unit.

Franklin leads Valley Division all-stars

Dani Franklin of Cedar Rapids Washington has been selected as the Athlete of the Year in the Valley Division of the Mississippi Valley Conference in girls basketball.

Haley Lorenzen of Iowa City High was named the Athlete of the Year in the Mississippi Division.

Franklin, Katie Sommer of Linn-Mar, Aleena Hobbs of Washington, Blaire Thomas of Waterloo West and Haley Puk of Waterloo West were unanimous first-team choices in the Valley Division. They were joined on the top squad by Cyerra Hutchins of Prairie, Hayley Deutmeyer of Xavier and Madison Wood of Cedar Falls.

Amanda Ollinger of Jefferson, Morgan Martin of Kennedy, Kiera Washpun of Iowa City High, Mikaela Morgan of Iowa City West and Lorenzen were unanimous picks in the Mississippi Division.
