No.8 Wash girls fall to No.4 Waukee

No.4 Waukee zoomed out to a 12-point lead in the first quarter and cruised past No.8 Washington, 64-50, Saturday in a non-conference battle of top 10 ranked Class 5A girls basketball teams.

Taylor Wingert scored 20 points to lead Waukee (15-0). Reilly Jacobson had 16 points.

Dani Franklin scored 21 points for Washington (14-4).

No.8 Warriors hold off scrappy Lions

Dani Franklin is proud of what her mother accomplished during the six-player era of girls basketball at Cedar Rapids Washington in the 1970's, but she prefers the five-player game just fine.

"I like the game the way it is now. Definitely," she said Friday night.

Franklin made consecutive 3-pointers in the first half to fuel a 15-0 run and the Class 5A eight-ranked Warriors held off Linn-Mar, 62-56, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game at Washington.

Deb Franklin scored 1,394 points for the Warriors back in the days when players never crossed mid-court. Dani Franklin has pumped in 1,055 points now, making them a rare mother/daughter combo with more than 1,000 apiece.

Warriors up to 8th in girls rankings

The Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball team moved up two spots to No.8 in this week's lass 5A rankings released Thursday by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union.

While Washington moved up, Kennedy dropped out of the Class 5A list. The Cougars were seventh in last week's rankings.

Xavier fell one spot to No.12 in the Class 4A rankings. The Saints are the only team in the rankings with a losing record.

Iowa City High (17-0) and Harlan (15-0) held onto the No. 1 spots in Classes 5A and 4A, respectively.

Franklin joins 1,000 Club at Washington

Dani Franklin has become the seventh member of the 1,000 Point Club for the Cedar Rapids Washington girls basketball program during the five-player era.

Franklin passed the 1,000-point mark last Saturday against Marshalltown and raised her total to 1,038 Tuesday night against Dubuque Wahlert.

Franklin is now sixth on the school scoring list behind Stacy Frese (1,477), Marsha Frese (1,393), Katelin Oney (1,314), Brenda Frese (1,271) and Alyssa Green (1,110). The seventh member of the club is Kayla Pirtle (1,033).

Franklin, a senior, will play college basketball at Valparaiso University. She is averaging 22.2 points for the 10th-ranked Warriors (13-3) and leads all Class 5A players in scoring.
