No.8 Cougars belt No.10 Warriors

Inside domination. Inside presence. Call it what you will.

It added up to an impressive win.

The No.8-ranked Kennedy Cougars used their inside superiority and great defense to stamp an easy 74-49 victory over No.10 Washington at the Warrior gym Friday night in a Mississippi Valley Conference girls basketball game.

Washington dropped to 5-2 overall and had a five-game winning streak halted. Kennedy improved to 7-1. The contest was a non-conference affair on a day when all Cedar Rapids schools were cancelled due to the icy conditions.

Wash girls return to ratings at No.10

The Washington Warriors, riding a five-game winning streak, returned to the Class 5A girls basketball rankings Thursday in the No.10 position.

Washington was ranked 10th in the preseason poll, but fell out of the rankings after being drubbed by top-ranked Iowa City High by 46 points in the season opener.

The Kennedy Cougars dropped one spot from No.7 to No.8 in Class 5A after losing to third-ranked Waterloo West on the road last week.

Washington hosts Kennedy on Friday night at 6 p.m.

Washington girls wallop Waterloo East

WATERLOO - Aleena Hobbs scored 16 points and Dani Franklin 14 as Washington routed Waterloo East, 68-21, Tuesday in girls basketball.

Sophie Ochs added 10 points for the Warriors.

Washington built a 49-7 lead by halftime.

Franklin, Hobbs lead Warriors past IC West

Dani Franklin scored 27 points and Aleena Hobbs added 21 to lead Washington to a 74-60 win over Iowa City West Friday night at the Warrior gym.

Franklin knocked down 11 field goals and was 4-for-5 from the free-throw line.

Washington scored 25 points in the first quarter and built a 39-32 lead by halftime.

Franklin nets 33 to spark Warriors

DUBUQUE - Dani Franklin collected 33 points and 10 rebounds Tuesday night as Cedar Rapids Washington defeated Dubuque Hempstead, 62-49, in a Mississippi Valley Conference game in Dubuque.

Franklin has produced two monster double-doubles in a row for the Warriors (3-1, 2-1). She had 37 points and 11 rebounds against Dubuque Senior Saturday and is averaging 23 points and 6.8 rebounds for the campaign.

Franklin made 11 of 23 shots from the field, including 4 of 9 from behind the 3-point line, and hit 7 of 8 free throws.
