Wash baseball team had illegal scrimmage

The Cedar Rapids Washington sophomore baseball team held an illegal scrimmage last season in violation of IHSAA rules.

Washington self-reported the violation to the IHSAA and was not penalized, according to Washington athletic director Paul James.

Tony Lombardi is the head baseball coach at Washington. He resigned Thursday as baseball and football coach, but not until the end of the 2012-13 contract year. He plans to lead the baseball program again this season.

James confirmed there was a scrimmage between the Washington sophomores and a pre-high school all-star team from Iowa City late in the 2012 season.

"We self-reported," he said. "Obviously the IHSAA told us not to do it again since it is against the rules.

"There were no penalties regarding coaches being allowed to coach, players being allowed to play, or Washington's team being allowed to play regular season or postseason contests," said James. "We are not banned from postseason play."
