White's power surge forges split with Xavier

Dan White belted a pair of three-run home runs to power Washington past Xavier, 14-11, and a split of their Mississippi Valley Conference baseball doubleheader Monday night at Washington.

Xavier won the opener, 14-1.

The teams combined for 25 runs and 33 hits in the nightcap. Xavier scored seven runs in the fifth inning to take an 11-9 lead. The Saints had eight hits in the frame.

The Warriors reclaimed the lead in the bottom of the fifth, 12-11, when White drove his second three-run shot.

“I was seeing the ball really well and was looking for a fastball and that was what I hit for each homer,” said White, who had three hits and seven RBIs in the game.  “It was really exciting. Then I got to come in an get the save.”

White preserved the victory for Zach Zingula, who pitched 1 1/3 innings in relief for the win. Zingula managed to stop the bleeding in the fifth and threw a shutout inning in the sixth before giving way to White.

A.J. Puk had three hits for the Warriors (6-7, 2-4). Blake Helms and Alex Ries led the Saints (8-3, 4-2) with three hits each.

Xavier scored eight runs in the fifth inning to put away the opener. Nate Even belted a grand slam in the inning. Evan had two hits and six RBIs. Mac Mattke had two hits.

“Coach Arp helped me with my swing before we came.  I needed some extra swings and that really helped,” said Even, the keeper on Xavier’s state championship soccer team.  The Saints won that title on Saturday and Even was in the baseball lineup Monday. “I was concentrating on trying to put the ball in play and really got a good one."

Ean McNeal pitched a complete game five-inning win for Xavier. He gave up an earned run in the first on two hits and then only gave up two more hits the rest of the game.

Sam Kacena had two of the Warriors' four hits and drove in their only run.

Washington plays Bettendorf Wednesday and conference foe Linn-Mar Thursday and Friday.  Xavier plays at Benton Community Tuesday and hosts Waterloo West on Friday.
