Warriors' late score beats Lions

Flynn Heald caught a three-yard touchdown pass from Braedon Tovey with 9 seconds left that lifted Washington past No. 2 Linn-Mar, 28-26, Monday night in the second round of the Class 4A football playoffs at Linn-Mar Stadium.

Linn-Mar (10-1) was seeded first in the eastern half of the state, Washington (8-3) ninth. Linn-Mar whipped the Warrriors 56-7 in Week 7 of the regular season.

Mark Atwater's 1-yard sneak with 5:55 left in the game had given Linn-Mar a 26-14 lead.

The Warriors got a good kickoff return by Heald to their own 47 and worked 53 yards in six plays. Tovey fired a 20-yard touchdown pass to Mitch Blades to pull Washington within 26-21 with 4:46 to play.

Linn-Mar anticipated an onsides kick and put its hands team on the field. Washington kicked off deep and the ball skipped into the end zone for a touchback.

A holding penalty by Linn-Mar pushed the ball back and the Lions eventuallly punted the ball with 2:08 left to play.

The Warriors got the ball on their own 42. A 24-yard pass play from Tovey to Heald moved the ball to the Linn-Mar 28. Tovey also had an 11-yard scramble that put thhe ball at the 7.

On third-and-goal from the 3, Tovey spied Heald in the left flat and zipped the ball past a diving Travis Kvach for a touchdown.
