Warriors jump to top in 4A football

The people who vote in the high school football polls have been keeping a keen eye on the Washington Warriors all season.

The Warriors began the year in the No.3 spot in the Class 4A poll in the Des Moines Register rankings. Then they climbed to No. 2 and now they're sitting all alone at the top of the poll after demolishing then-No. 9 Linn-Mar, 43-3, Friday night.

Washington got some help in the rankings Friday night from the Lombardi family. Rocky Lombardi, the son of former Washington coach Tony Lombardi, passed for 206 yards and two touchdowns as West Des Moines Valley upset Dowling Catholic, 24-21, an outcome that knocked Dowling out of the No. 1 spot in the poll and opened the door for the Warriors.

No. 2 Warriors belt No. 9 Lions, 43-3

O'Rien Vance had a block party Friday night at Linn-Mar Stadium.

The rangy Cedar Rapids Washington linebacker may have been unknown before the No. 2 Warriors' showdown with No. 9 Linn-Mar. On a team loaded with NCAA Division I-caliber players, Vance showed the overflow crowd he is a star in the making.

Vance blocked a pair of punts that were both scooped up by teammates for touchdowns and the Warriors kept the Linn-Mar offense in check en route to an impressive 43-3 non-district victory.

The 6-foot-3, 190-pounder was also all over the field on defense, making life miserable for Lions quarterback Ryan Schmidt.

Warriors, Lions tangle in 4A showdown

The resurgent Linn-Mar football team has gotten off to a 3-0 start, but the Lions will face their stiffest test of the season Friday night when the Washington Warriors invade Linn-Mar Stadium for a Class 4A non-district game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. on KCRG 1600-AM/107.5 FM.

Linn-Mar senior quarterback Ryan Schmidt has rushed for 152 yards and seven touchdowns this season. He also has passed for 240 yards and two touchdowns by hitting 19 of 35 passes.

Speedster Perrion Scott has carried the ball 26 times for 287 yards. He scored three touchdowns in the first quarter last week in an easy win at Clinton.

Logan Benter, a running back and linebacker for the Lions, missed last week's game with a leg injury, but is expected back this week.

No.3 Warriors blank Iowa City West

For a fleeting moment, Julian Good-Jones thought the Iowa State marching band performed at Kingston Stadium Friday night especially for him.

Cedar Rapids Washington's premier lineman will play football for the Cyclones next year, but the ISU band was actually here in conjunction with the big game between the Cyclones and Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Saturday.

In any case, the Iowa State band made the third-ranked Warriors feel especially good about themselves in their 28-0 conquest of Iowa City West in a Class 4A non-district game.

"I didn't know until today they were coming, but it was pretty cool," said Good-Jones. "A lot of people were making jokes that they were coming for me.

"I didn't know if it was true or not. I didn't know what to think."
