James named Valley Division's top coach

Paul James has been named the Valley Division Coach of the Year in the Mississippi Valley Conference for coming out of retirement this year and leading a troubled program to a 6-4 record and a berth in the Class 4A playoffs.

James and his assistant coaches shared the award, the league announced Tuesday.

A total of 26 Metro players were named first team all-conference, as selected by the league's coaches. The Xavier Saints led the way with six first-team picks. Washington and Prairie claimed five first-team berths, Kennedy nabbed four spots, Linn-Mar had three selections and Jefferson had three selections.

Magic season ends for Warriors

Cedar Falls put a saddle on its big offensive line and rode it over Cedar Rapids Washington for a 27-10 first-round Class 4A playoff victory Wednesday on a rainy night at Kingston Stadium.

"Rather than taking chances (passing) on a night like this, when you have perhaps the best offensive lineman in the country ... if you have a horse, might as well ride it," Cedar Falls Coach Pat Mitchell said.

Mitchell was referring to top-ranked offensive line recruit Ross Pierschbacher. The 6-foot-4, 295-pound tackle has verbally committed to defending national champion Alabama.

Cedar Falls (7-3) attempted just one pass play, and instead kept the ball on the ground and pounded out 289 yards on 68 attempts. The Tigers had 21 first downs.

Bjornsens have Wash football in their blood

The Bjornsen family has played a special role on the Cedar Rapids Washington football team through the years.

Greg, Steve and Kevin Bjornsen - three brothers - starred for the Warriors as all-state players during the 1980s. Now their sons are members of a special group at Washington this year.

Clayton, Jake and Lars Bjornsen - three first cousins and all seniors - have helped the Warriors win six straight games and reach the first round of the Class 4A playoffs during a remarkable campaign.

Cedar Rapids Washington did 6-3 the hard way, winning its sixth straight in Week 9 after starting the season 0-3.

The Warriors beat Dubuque Wahlert, 31-13, Thursday at Kingston Stadium to clinch at least a share of the Valley Division crown in the Mississippi Valley Conference and a home playoff game on Wednesday.

Their opponent will be decided after Friday night's games.

"I couldn't see this at 0-3," junior linebacker Connor Vincent said. "Unbelievable. We just put the work in. Everyone started doing their job."
