Silver is pure gold for Warriors

Royal Silver has a distinctive name that's easy to remember, evoking colorful images of precious metals and befitting a British monarch, but he wasn't always fond of it.

"In elementary school I didn't like it, because I thought it was an odd name," he said Monday. "But I like it now."

Silver is a 6-foot-3, 275-pound nose guard on the Cedar Rapids Washington football team, a stalwart on the defensive line and one of the reasons the Warriors have won five straight games and are heading for the Class 4A playoffs.

Warriors' magical run continues at Prairie

The Magic Men from Cedar Rapids Washington did it again Friday night.

Reid Snitker hit Jake Bjornsen with a 24-yard scoring pass with 9.7 seconds left to snap a 14-14 tie and give the surging Warriors a 21-14 victory over Prairie at John Wall Field.

Washington (5-3, 4-1) began the season with three straight losses, but they've won five straight games and are headed to the playoffs.

The victory also put the Warriors in the driver's seat for the Valley Division title in the Mississippi Valley Conference. If Washington and Xavier both win next week and finish 5-1 in the Valley Division, the Warriors will be the champs because they upset the Saints three weeks ago.

Wash trims Jeff for 4th in row

A couple of old warhorses, Cedar Rapids Washington Principal Ralph Plagman and Coach Paul James, stood talking at midfield Friday night after the Warriors eked out a 14-7 win over Jefferson at Kingston Stadium.

They've been together 33 years now, and neither can remember a Cinderella football season like the one they're now enjoying.

James was brought back to coach a team with dim prospects after former coach Tony Lombardi resigned. They lost their first three games with very little flair.

Now, however, the Warriors have won four in a row, including a huge upset over then-No.1 Xavier last week.

Warriors stun No.1 Saints, 26-10

Paul James quit coaching once. The way things are going now, it might be a long, long time before he ever quits again.

James and the amazing Washington Warriors tore the top-ranked Xavier Saints to shreds Friday night with a stunning 26-10 victory that was equal parts coaching genius and equal parts a phenomenal performance by the guys in red, white and blue.

The Saints and their homecoming crowd left the stadium with the same thought: Who were those guys?

Warriors riding surge of amazing win

Cedar Rapids Washington quarterback Reid Snitker has watched the replays of last Friday's 28-27 victory over Waterloo West several times now.

It's an instant classic.

He throws a touchdown pass with 61 seconds left. The on-sides kick is successful. He throws another TD pass to the same guy with 15.5 seconds left.

Just like that, a hopeless 27-15 deficit becomes an incredible 28-27 victory.
